More filth than fun

Who is the artist known as Peaches? She's got a mouth like a Red Fox record. She's honed minimal beats in the vein of Kraftwerk. She's a girl power rocker influenced by Joan Jett (we'll come back to her later). She's dirtier than Lil' Kim and Missy Elliot. The PMRC would have a heart attack if they heard this. Is it punk or disco, electronica or rap? Well, it's all of the above. Peaches brings the trashiness with her new album, Impeach My Bush. Sexual innuendo is included.\nIt's always good to start a record off with the f-word. "Fuck or Kill" is a short punk anthem against our president with a sexual twist (or is it the other way around?). Things move right into a dance floor shaker. Straight up dirty synth and hand claps, "Tent In Your Pants" is basically raunchy electroclash trash.\n"Downtown" is the first single off of Bush with Peaches switching her vocal style from sexy and gritty to dirty and wispy, over beepy boppy beats. Do I need to explain what this song is about? I'm sure you can venture your own guess (just get your mind in the gutter). Another filthy track, "Rock the Shocker," is a song about none other than the shocker. A funny concept, but the beats are weak, and this song just doesn't have enough watts to light the light bulb.\nThe most rockin' track on Impeach My Bush is "Boys Wanna Be Her," with AC/DC-esque guitars and a sinister synth line accompanying a mildly catchy chorus.\n"You Love It" has Joan Jett on guitar duty and contributing her powerful vocals, which goes to show you that Peaches does rock better than she does her rap/electronica deal. "Give 'Er" is another rocking track, with the infamous Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age/Eagles Of Death Metal) on guitar. Simple rock' n' roll without the bullshit, with that fun Joan Jett feel to it. I approve…\n"Slippery Dick" is another immature sex song that just sounds like a crappy Missy Elliot tune (there's an oxymoron for you). I'm sorry, but a fortysomething woman singing about sex just strikes me as sort of ridiculous. The rest of the album, aside from "Do Ya" (more rock here), is just more crappy rapping over some fairly sweet dirty synth beats. Kill the vocals and I'd say we'd have a pretty kick-ass techno album. \nPeaches isn't necessarily original. Electronic music's been around for quite some time now; she just adds filth to it. This music is fun while it lasts: it would probably make a good backdrop for a typical college party. Feminist music is nothing new either. For what it's worth, this album is fairly generic. The beats are hard, but aren't varied enough to hold your attention for very long. The rock tracks are good, but the dance tracks just suck. Check out Mount Sims for some electroclash that works, and Gravy Train!!! for your filthy sex fix.
