COLUMBUS, Ind. -- An Indiana woman died and a former Hoosier was injured when a weekend diving trip went awry off the Caribbean coast of Belize.\nAbigail Brinkman, 28, was among four people who had been missing since Saturday, having apparently tried to swim to land after their boat began drifting out to sea. A fishing vessel found three survivors and Brinkman's body Monday, said a man who answered the phone at her parents' home and identified himself as a family friend.\nThe divers -- two men and two women -- apparently had devices that allowed them to stay afloat during their three-day ordeal at sea. The three survivors were taken to a hospital in Belize City, Belize police spokesman G. Michael Reed said.\nOfficials did not release the names or nationalities of the other \nsurvivors.\nThe boat had been in an area where Hurricane Wilma had passed by further out to sea hours before, but authorities did not know whether Brinkman's death was related to the storm.\nBrinkman graduated in 1995 from Columbus East High School and was a fourth-year medical student at IU's School of Medicine in Indianapolis. She was in Belize as part of a tropical medicine internship and had gone to the coast for a weekend diving trip, the family spokesman said.\nIndianapolis native John Bain, who now lives in Racine, Wis., survived the ordeal.\nMary Garrett of Indianapolis, Bain's mother, said she spoke to her son Tuesday afternoon as he recovered in a Belize hospital.\nBain, 50, a patent attorney, was suffering from hypothermia and a jellyfish sting, Garrett said. He is expected to leave the hospital in a couple of days.\nShe said Bain, who had taken extensive scuba training, and the three other divers had tried to swim to land after their boat began drifting but could not make it. Initially he was with the other male diver, but the two became separated, she said.\n"We feel very blessed that he's OK. It was short of a miracle," Garrett said. "We're just sorry that they weren't all saved"
