Woman reports rape Tuesday at Varsity Villas

A 20-year-old woman reported being raped early Tuesday morning in her apartment at the Varsity Villas complex, according to Bloomington Police Department reports.\nThe victim said she met a man she didn't know while she was at another apartment in the complex with about 10 to 15 other people, BPD Sgt. David Drake said. The report said the two then returned to the woman's apartment, where they drank and began kissing on the woman's bed.\nThe woman, Drake said, next remembered waking up in bed and realized that the man was having sex with her. She asked him what he was doing, at which point he stopped, dressed and left the apartment, according to the report.\nBPD responded at 2:52 a.m. Tuesday. Drake said police are still seeking a suspect in the case.

Karton King robbed, suspect apprehended

\nBloomington police arrested a man suspected of a late-night theft Tuesday after he tried to sell cigarettes to strangers in the middle of the night. \nRobbie Dale Gribble was charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief after he allegedly smashed a window at Karton King, 435 S. Walnut St., and took a carton of cigarettes. Police later responded to several complaints of a man trying to sell cigarettes at about 1:30 a.m., first in the parking lot of a car dealership and later at a residence in an apartment complex. \nPolice apprehended Gribble at the Southern Winds Inn on South Walnut Street with a large box of cigarettes. He was wanted on an unrelated warrant for theft and was arrested, according to the police report.

Investigation \ncontinues in mosque attack case

\nThe Bloomington Police Department is continuing its investigation into a July 9 attack on a city mosque. BPD Captain Joe Qualters said his department is not close to an arrest in the case, though it is still open and under investigation.\nThe attack came during the early morning hours when a rock was thrown through the mosque's window and a small fire was lit. Police also found a Quran that had been set on fire outside of the building.\nBPD is investigating the attack along with the FBI, which classified it as a hate crime. FBI spokeswoman Wendy Osborne said the investigation is continuing and it is FBI policy not to comment.

Bank robbery suspect possibly involved in Gosport

\nA suspect arrested in connection with a July Bloomington bank robbery might also be wanted for a bank heist in nearby Gosport, Ind. The man is not believed to be connected with two other Bloomington bank robberies that occurred during a similar time period, Qualters said. \nBloomington police arrested John F. Harlow Aug. 5 after he was identified in a surveillance video from a July 18 robbery of Old National Bank. Qualters said he believed Harlow was a suspect in a July 30 bank robbery in Gosport, Ind., though the Owen County Sheriff's Department did not return calls Tuesday confirming that.\nQualters said Harlow is not suspected of robbing the Key Bank on College Mall Road, which was hit July 13 and July 27. \n"At this point, they do not appear to be connected," Qualters said. "But we can't say that with any certainty right now."
