Former history professor dies

Donald Carmony, IU professor emeritus known as "Mr. History," died Monday. \nBorn in 1910, Carmony became synonymous with Indiana history. He was the former editor of the Indiana Magazine of History and worked closely with former IU President Herman B Wells. In 1998, he was given the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, the highest honor given to citizens by Indiana's governor. Other recipients include IU President Adam Herbert.\nHistory professor James Madison, who replaced Carmony as the editor of the Indiana Magazine of History, said Carmony was the classic image of an "honorable gentleman."\n"When it came to Indiana's history, he was the man," he said.
