IU faces many options for new coach

Neuheisel, Solich, Brandon amongst possible candidates

With only one week having passed since the firing of former IU football coach Gerry DiNardo, speculation has begun about who his replacement will be.\nAmong possible candidates rumored for the IU job is former Washington Huskies coach Rick Neuheisel.\n"I think Rick Neuheisel is interested in a job," said his father, Dick Neuheisel. "He wants to be a head coach in college again."\nDick Neuheisel said he was not sure if IU had contacted Rick Neuheisel and did not think that his son had contacted the Hoosiers. \n"Indiana is a great school," Dick Neuheisel said. "I'm sure he would (go to IU if he was asked), yeah. Why not? IU is a great school, but he makes those calls. Occasionally, I give that advice."\nNeuheisel played in the 1984 Rose Bowl as a member of the University of California Los Angeles team, coached the Huskies to a 2001 Rose Bowl win and was also inducted to the Rose Bowl's Hall of Fame in 1998. \nThe Hoosiers have not been to the Rose Bowl since their 14-3 loss to University of Southern California in the 1968 game.\nWith the hiring of former Florida coach Ron Zook by Illinois Tuesday, the list of potential candidates for the IU job shrunk by one. \nAlso included on that list is former Miami Dolphins head man Dave Wannstedt, who resigned from the NFL Nov. 9 after leading the Dolphins to a 1-8 record.\n"Coach Wannstedt indicated to me that he would have no comment on any rumor that linked his name to any coaching position at any level," said Dolphins Public Relations Director Harvey Green. \nOther potential candidates could include former Nebraska coach Frank Solich, former Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham, recently fired Ole Miss coach David Cutcliffe and former Ohio State leader John Cooper. Speculation has also surrounded current Oklahoma offensive coordinator Chuck Long, along with Miami-Ohio coach Terry Hoeppner and Bowling Green coach Gregg Brandon.\n"We don't comment on anything regarding personnel matters if there's no basis for it," said Bowling Green's Assistant Athletic Director for Communications J.D. Campbell.\nIU Athletics Director Rick Greenspan announced the formation of a search committee for the new head coach Monday.\nThe time frame to select a new coach was not specified by Greenspan or the committee.\n-- Contact senior writer Josh Weinfuss at jweinfus@indiana.edu.
