Bring on the burritos

Oooooh, they tore down the Chipotle sign ... that'll show 'em! Bravo. Who's next? Taco Bell? Lowe's? Target? The local Chevy dealer? I guess Bridget Kennedy is looking out for us, keeping us safe from the onslaught of corporate America. Uh ... too late, my dear. Bloomington will keep moving forward with or without you. I am, though, scratching my head as to just how delicious burritos (something Bloomington is sorely lacking) are somehow going to "destroy the local community." One large tortilla at a time, I suppose. That old McDonald's was an eyesore and hangout for gangs, bums and other hoodlums. Guess they need our love and support too, eh Bridget? How 'bout you host them? Maybe they can spray their beautiful graffiti - I'm sorry - murals all over your house? In the meantime, jobs and commerce will take the place of an abandoned rat hole. Hey, maybe the State could own all restaurants, ensuring they will offer healthy, non-corporate food. This way, the businesses will be protected against competition. Worked for the Russians ... well, not really. Even they figured out how stupid lack of competition is. For me, Chipotle is a light at the end of a tunnel. For my money, the best burritos are in San Antonio (the further from the Riverwalk, the better) but despite what the whiners think, Chipotle's are awesome. The enlightened insights of the 18-24 college student -- you know the one with all the life experience and who really knows how the real world works -- will not stand in the way of thousands in need of a good burrito. Don't like 'em? Fine, enjoy the substandard offerings of the others. (Shhhhh ... La Bamba is a chain store!) Meanwhile, I'll be enjoying Carnitas (free range pork!). Mark A. Gall
