Baring it in Briscoe

New round of porn controversy finds IU with student Web site

As most freshmen know, you can never be quite sure what's looming in the murky stalls of a dorm shower. Mildew, athlete's foot ... half-naked girls shooting pics for their hot teen Web site. \nBetter wear your shower shoes. \nThat last bathroom belle would be "Keira," the IU freshman whose Web site, www.teenkeira.com boasts pictures of her in a dorm room and shower in Briscoe-Shoemaker. For $24.95 per month, you can find out more -- and help Keira fund her education. \n"It kind of helps pay for school and living next year," Keira told the IDS for a story Tuesday. \n Of course, Keira isn't the first entrepreneur to cash in on adult entertainment here at IU. In the fall of 2002, adult film actress and publicist Calli Cox showed up with six of her friends from Shane Enterprises to enlighten students with oral sex and spots in the company's latest "Campus Invasion" film. Students who lived in Teter-Wissler allowed the film crew and actors to come into the dorm, where they filmed sexual acts in the hallways and bathroom.\nAccording to the IDS, the students who participated in Teter's cinema classic were held to the section in IU's student code of conduct that prescribes discipline for lewd, indecent or obscene conduct on University property (April 6). Dean of Students Richard McKaig said he could not reveal the action taken against those students, but said Keira's case "may play out the same way." \nWe agree Keira's investigation should play out the same way. That is, she should be held to the same rule her predecessors were. She broke the code publicly, and she got caught. For that, she can be punished accordingly. \nStill, we don't feel Keira's offense is quite as severe as the Teter crowd's. Her endeavors can go on secretly in her own room. Those involved in the Teter incident imposed on other students in the dorm. They brought in strangers. They invaded the hallways. This is perhaps more disconcerting than the behavior that went on once they got there. \nIf Keira is reprimanded, it should be according to the books -- no more, no less. We would hate to see administrators make an example of her for publicity's sake. As McKaig pointed out, "Lots of things students do do not always reflect on the University."\nIn all honesty, lots of "things students do" in their dorm rooms might be considered lewd, indecent or obscene. Keira is certainly different in that she broadcasts it to the masses, but condemning her behavior per se would implicate many more students who will never be punished. \nOur biggest concern with Keira's business really is that she is taking it to the showers. It's not fair to those residents who can't help but be involved. Some people just want to brush their teeth.
