The Department of the History & Philosophy of Science is hosting a lecture entitled "Two Accidents Rooted in History and Culture: the Space Shuttles Challenger and Columbia in Perspective."\nJoseph N. Tatarewicz, an associate professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, will be the lecturer. He has studied and written space flight history for more than 20 years, including work at NASA and the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.\nThe 1986 demise of the space shuttle Challenger and the 2003 loss of the space shuttle Columbia will be the main focus of the speech. Tatarewicz will provide a historical overview of the space shuttle program, review the two accidents and their causes, and discuss the historical interactions of engineering, science, politics and society.
