The Law School Admission Council estimates there are about 3,000 students at IU-Bloomington, from over 53 majors, who are potentially interested in going to law school. For these potential IU law students, the annual Law Day will help students decide which school may be best for them. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., today in Alumni Hall located in the Indiana Memorial Union.\nThis year will see more applications to law schools than any year in history, prelaw adviser Roy G. Francis said in a statement. He said attendance at Law Day events can give students a competitive edge.\nThe Midwest Association of Prelaw Advisors is co-sponsoring the event this year along with the Health Professions and Prelaw Center.\nLaw Day gives students the opportunity to talk with representatives from law schools around the country.\nInstead of the usual 65 schools attending, there will be more than 100. With 186 law schools in the country, there will be representatives from more than half of the nation's schools in Alumni Hall.\nLast year's turnout of over 800 was a record and attracted nationwide attention.\nThere will also be a panel discussion earlier in the day, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the Georgian Room. Four law school admission deans will discuss "What I Really Look for in a Law School Application." They will focus on applicants' common mistakes, what works, what they find annoying and they will offer practical insights into the admission process. The panel will include Dennis\nShields of Duke University, IU Law School Dean Kevin Robling, Jennifer Yetwin of University of California-Berkeley and Janet Hein of University of Dayton Law School. Shields was formerly at University of Michigan law, and was the school's "point person" when the recent U.S. Supreme Court case on racial preferences in admissions began.\nLast year, 62 percent of applicants nationwide were admitted to at least one law school. For all IU applicants, including alumni, the figure was 67 percent. For students who registered with the Health Professionals and Prelaw Center, the figure was 84 percent.\nAnyone interested in law school can be added to the HPPLC e-mail list by calling 855-1873 or e-mailing them at udivhpp@indiana.edu.
