Latino summit held today

The 2003 Latino Summit is being held at St. Paul's Catholic Center, 1413 E. 17th St., today. \nMayor John Fernandez and Sergio Aguilera Beteta, the Mexican Consulate from Indianapolis, said a "major announcement" will be made at the event. \n"The announcement will make the meeting very interesting," said city of Bloomington Communications Director Penni Sims.\nAccording to a press release, the Summit will address labor, legal and advocacy issues facing members of the Latino community in Bloomington and Monroe County. \nThe day-long event begins at 9 a.m., with the morning announcement at 9:30 a.m. The summit will include panel discussions led by group experts.\n"Right now I have 140 people that are actually registered for the event," Sims said.\nThe first panel discussion, "Current issues in the community," will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. \nThe second panel runs from 11:45 to 1:30 p.m. and will focus on resources and suggestions. \nMartha Carvajal, constituent services representative and liaison to the state's growing Latino community for Senator Evan Bayh's office, will be on the panel.\nA discussion group from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. will encompass a variety of topics ranging from labor issues to criminal justice.\nThe meeting is scheduled to conclude at 3:30 p.m.\nOther participants in the summit include Roger Kelly from Bloomington Police Department, Barbara McKinney from the Bloomington Human Rights Commission, Pedro Roman of Centro Communal Latino, Brenda Ogborn from Monroe County Probation Office, Monroe County Prosecutor Carl Salzmann, Lt. Adolfo "Rudy" Olivo from the Columbus Police Department and former attorney Michelle Gutierrez.\nAdmission to the event is $10 and lunch is provided.
