Elkhart mayor zapped

ELKHART, Ind. -- Mayor David Miller found out firsthand how it feels to be shot by a Taser.\nDuring a demonstration by police Tuesday, the mayor screamed and stumbled when hit with the Taser.\nWhen Cpl. Frank Owens cut off the current to Miller's body after two seconds, the mayor immediately recovered.\n"I can't imagine anyone standing up to that and not complying," said Miller, who compared the sensation to a "huge muscle cramp."\nThe new Advanced Taser M26 guns offer police better protection than other stun guns or pepper spray because officers don't have to get as close to offenders, Chief Pamela Westlake said.\nWestlake said the number of offenders resisting arrest has increased by 17 percent in Elkhart over the last year.\nSix officers carry the weapons, but soon all patrol officers will carry Taser guns along with their regular weapons, she said.\nThe department will spend about $47,000 to buy 75 more Taser guns.
