Murder suspect speaks out

Accused man warns court that 'Judgement Day nears'

EVANSVILLE -- A man charged with killing two people inside a neighborhood tavern over the weekend warned others during a court hearing of Judgment Day and called the judge Lucifer.\nJames E. Durham Jr., 25, was arraigned Monday on murder charges in the shooting deaths of Steven W. Winnecke, 50, and Marsha Fraser, 52.\nTwo others also were wounded in the shooting. Durham faces two counts of attempted murder for their injuries.\nThe four were shot after Durham entered the Stan's Place tavern east of the city's downtown and uttered "biblical gibberish," police said. Winnecke and one of the others injured were co-owners of the bar.\nIn the courtroom Monday, Durham spouted religion-laced insults and addressed Vanderburgh Circuit Court Judge Carl Heldt as "Lucifer" and "Satan." \n"It's Judgment Day, and you all know it's Judgment Day, and I'm the only one who knows it," he said. "Open the book, it's going to kill every one of you devils. Gentiles!"\nWhen asked his name by the judge, Durham called himself Abraham.\nDurham's mother said her son suffers from a mental disorder. "He was diagnosed schizophrenic when he was 8 years old," Jennie Upchurch said. "It started when he was going to school. He wouldn't sit still for the teachers or listen to them."\nHeldt ordered Durham held without bond and appointed Cole Banks as his defense attorney.\nA message seeking comment was left Tuesday at Banks' law office.\nInvestigators searched Durham's apartment after the shootings and found several Bibles and some personal writings, police Sgt. Bret Fitzsimmons said.\nDetectives are planning ballistics testing to establish a link between the shootings Saturday and another shooting that happened Friday night with the same caliber weapon, Fitzsimmons said.\n"We feel like he is a good suspect in that shooting as well," Fitzsimmons said.
