Godsmack evolves with third effort

('Faceless' - Godsmack)

There is an overwhelming trend in the music industry to push bands into a mold and make them rehash the same music until the market throws up and they get discarded. Godsmack is one of the few bands that has actually evolved over the course of its three albums. Faceless still has the characteristic tuned down guitars and killer screaming, but also showcases a few musical tangents that add depth to the album.\nThe evolution comes mostly from the vocals of Sully Erna who stretches his range a little and Tony Rombola who has improved his lead playing considerably. A nice touch comes from the addition of acoustic guitars on tracks like "Serenity," which has a bongo and tribal chanting intro.\nFaceless is an even darker collection of heavy-hitting songs. Tracks like "I Fucking Hate You" make Puddle of Mudd look like the whining bunch of sissies it is. The only shortcoming is that some of the songs sound similar to past efforts, no doubt a product of Sully writing all songs. Regardless, it's nice to know that Godsmack has the minerals to not sell out and the talent to deliver quality hardcore music.
