A six-year window to return to Indiana University was part of former President Myles Brand's deal when he left to lead the NCAA, and it has raised the ire of faculty members.\nDuring a Bloomington Faculty Council meeting on Tuesday, some members objected to Brand's leave of absence and said the deferred compensation he could receive as a result could be put to better use.\n"Has this university ever given anyone a six-year leave?" asked faculty council member Richard Nash.\nIU trustees agreed in January to grant a six-year unpaid leave to Brand, who left this year to head the National Collegiate Athletic Association after eight years at the university.\nThe university's policy allows unpaid leave no longer than two years. During the meeting, university officials discussed whether exceptions can be made if it is in the best interest of the university.\nBesides allowing Brand to return to the university as a philosophy professor, the agreement will allow him to collect more than $300,000 in deferred compensation that IU paid to an account for him.\nBrand can collect the money after he turns 65 in 2007 and is again an IU employee. The money would be returned to the university if Brand does not return.
