Mother finds IUPD tactics appalling, a violation of Fourth Amendment rights

I am writing this letter to express my grave concern that my son's right to privacy has been violated. My hope is that you will be equally concerned. He is a resident of Alpha Tau Omega house and was involved in an incident on Friday morning, Sept. 20, which I believe represents police harassment and abuse of power.\nAt 2:30 a.m., the IUPD walked into his room without knocking and with no warrant based on information from four women that they had been drinking at the ATO house. He and three other people were sitting on couches in his room. There were no visible signs of drinking, no loud music and no reason for the police to invade his space. They demanded that each take a breath test. He refused, which I support. The police gave him a ticket anyway and proceeded to other rooms. Most residents were either sleeping or ready to go to sleep. The police were waking residents and demanding they take a breath test.\nI am appalled that these are the tactics the University is supporting and am certain I am with many parents who do not want their sons and daughters subjected to this harassment. I pay the University to assist in my son's education. I pay the fraternity rent to provide housing that is safe and conducive to his academic pursuits. If the situation described was replicated in my own home, would it be acceptable for the local police force to open my door and walk in? I don't think so. I would consider that a violation of my fourth amendment rights.\nIt is understandable that the University would react to the recent publicity citing IU as the number one party school in the country. That reaction seems evident by the increase in alcohol citations this September over last. They have more than doubled. Though I support the goal of emphasis on the mission of the University, I would debate the tactics and would appreciate an opportunity to meet to discuss this further.
