IU classes are meeting today so students can discuss the day's events in the wake of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, University officials said.\nThe University has also made long distance phone calls free so students can keep in touch with family.\nStudents at IU in Bloomington and at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis can make free long-distance calls until midnight Tuesday to get in touch with friends and families affected by the terrorists attacks. Free calling is available to the following areas: Boston and the surrounding metropolitan area; New York City and the surrounding areas including the Newark-Trenton-Philadelphia corridor of New Jersey; Washington D.C. and the metropolitan area; Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania; Los Angeles and the surrounding areas; and the San Francisco metropolitan area.\nTo take advantage of the free calling students need to use any University telephone, dial nine, then one, then the phone number (including area code). Prompted by a recording, enter the pass code: 1234567. The phone call will then be put through if phone lines are available.\nA University spokeswoman said going to classes would give students and faculty a chance to talk about the attacks in New York and Washington.\n"(President Myles Brand) wants to express deep sorrow and concern over this national tragedy," IU spokeswoman Susan Dillman said. "The safety of our students, faculty and staff is our paramount concern.\n"While it's not business as usual, we're an academic institution, and we must move forward," Brand said through Dillman.\nThe University has made the following arrangements for students:\n• The University is planning forums this evening at all campuses so students and faculty can talk about today's events.\n• The IU Health Center has been put on alert for counseling services.\n• If students feel they cannot attend class, they may make arrangements with the dean of students office at 855-8187.
