Sometimes the Truth Hurts

Truthfully Speaking
Truth Hurts
Aftermath/Interscope Records Ashanti, Khia, Tweet, and now Truth Hurts are all coming out with R&B/Hip Hop albums that many are hoping to be big hits this summer. African American females are making a major appearance and comeback in music. At the bottom of the list is Truth Hurts. Truth Hurts can now be seen on "TRL" and "106 and Park" with her first single, "Addictive," on which she collaborates with Rakim. This Middle Eastern sounding tune is completely set apart from other tracks on her album, Truthfully Speaking, and doesn't sound one bit like anything else. Fans of the song will be disappointed with the rest of the album. While Truth Hurts made quite a statement with the unique sound in "Addictive," the rest of the album isn't any different from other R&B albums. "Jimmy" is a song about having a lover in the state penitentiary locked up for ten or more years. She battles with Jimmy being in jail for so long, and yet, she continues to wait for him. The seductive melody of the song doesn't fit with the lyrics. It's a weird song, and hopefully won't be hitting the airwaves anytime soon, along with others like "Queen of the Ghetto" and "Do Me." "Hollywood" has a good beat to it and features Dr. Dre, who also produced the album. Dre might have let us down on this one, though. Fans expect a lot from Dre, and fans won't be impressed by Truth Hurts' first album Truthfully Speaking. Is she a singer, a rapper or both? A cross between Brandy and Lil' Kim is what she sounds like. Truth Hurts may have been more successful if she had chosen one way to go, rap or R&B. "Addictive" has become a summer hit and with good reason. It's a shame that the rest of the album isn't worth the listen.
