Trustee may run UN agency

IU's Morris to preserve global food program

An IU board of trustees member may be bound for diplomacy on an international scale.\nJames T. Morris, head of the parent company for the Indianapolis Water Company and Trustee member since 1996, is expected to receive a nomination to lead the United Nations World Food Program in Rome. Morris' spot allows the U.S. to maintain a major spot in a UN agency. \nMorris is the chairman and chief executive officer of the IWC Resources Company. \nAccording to an article published Monday in The Indianapolis Star, a spokesperson said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, along with the UN director general for Food and Agricultural Organizations had appointed Morris.\nPresident George W. Bush intially nominated Morris in October to serve as U.S. ambassador for the global food program, but the Bush administration instead opted to appoint him to the hands-on operations of the FAO.\nThe appointment must be confirmed by the Senate. Senior public affairs officer Francis Mwanza told The Star Monday an official announcement of the appointment could be made in New York as soon as Tuesday.\nFor a complete story, see Wednesday's IDS.
