The Asian Culture Center and History Department will sponsor a lecture entitled, "The Thomasites and American Colonial Education in the Philippines" by visiting gue Professor Bernardita Churchill Tuesday night. Churchill is a historian at the University of the Philippine. In 1901, 600 American teachers traveled to the Philippines aboard the USS Thomas on an "educational expedition" to build a school system for America's newest colony. \nThroughout the next 20 years, the "Thomasites" transplanted the customs and methods of American public schools and arguably affected the Filipino way of life. She will look back on the Thomasite experiment after 100 years and evaluate its lessons for history, education and the future of international humanitarianism. \nThe lecture will take place tonight in the Maple Room of the Indiana Memorial Union at 7 p.m. For more information, contact acc@indiana.edu.
