Muslims part of community

I am writing to express my sadness and anger over the attacks on international and Muslim students in the wake of the terrible, terrible events of Tuesday last week. Now more than ever, we need to ask ourselves what we think we know about the world, about "Arabs" and Muslims, how we think we know it, and how our purported knowledge enables us to act. \nWe are suffering from sorrow, but we will ultimately suffer equally from our own ignorance and cowardice. The people involved in bringing Tuesday's tragedy about have committed an atrocity, not only against the United States, but also against all peace-loving Islamic people in the world. \nIf we turn against the Muslims with whom we share our community, we will be assisting terrorists in their mission to polarize us on lines that have nothing to do with the realities of the majority of people in the world -- people with families, hopes and a variety of religious faiths, all aimed at living safely and lovingly with others. Our Muslim peers, friends, colleagues and community members are as much the victims of these terrible attacks as are any of us. It would be kind and proper to recognize that we all grieve together.
