Brand awards funding for arts and humanities grants

President Myles Brand announced IU awarded nearly $900,000 in arts and humanities research grants to 31 faculty members and collaborative groups. He said he put aside the funds during his State of the University speech last October.\nBrand appointed George Walker, IU vice president for research, to oversee committees that would set guidelines and make recommendations for awarding grants. The pair of faculty-comprised, six-member committees then reviewed the 84 grant applications filed by IU faculty.\nBrand set aside $4 million to be given to the research projects during the next four years. The funds were targeted for professors in liberal studies fields.\n"It is evident from the recommendations I've received that Indiana University is most fortunate to have many talented faculty in the arts and humanities," Brand said. "The first round of awards has clearly been a success."\nTwenty of the 31 faculty and groups receiving the grants were from the Bloomington campus. Six came from IUPUI, two were from IU South Bend and one each came from IU East, IU Kokomo and IU Northwest.\n"Funding for serious research and creative work is becoming unavailable from other sources, and IU must find ways to support its own scholars and artists," Brand said in the speech.
