Riots over, time to move on

I am writing in response to Duncan Teater's April 16 article "Distracting the public eye." The riots that occurred after the firing of Coach Knight were very small in comparison to other basketball riots. Maybe you remember the riots at Purdue after the women's basketball team won the national championship. They had a fire that was so hot it melted some of the asphalt that was underneath. There is still a dip in the road where the fire was. After Knight was fired, a friend of mine who goes to Purdue said, "We need to teach you guys how to riot." IU has had worse riots in the past. The worst riot that occurred at IU was not the Knight riots, but the riots that happened a few years ago during Little 500 weekend at the Varsity Villas. Those riots still have a lasting effect on us, because the residence halls will be locked all the time, and you will see a cop every five feet during Little 500 now. I do agree with one point Teater made, the academic achievements at this University are not very well known, and that is something that should change. But just because a person is a basketball fan does not make them a vacant-eyed person who shaves "IU" into their chest hair. I have always been an IU fan, I defended Knight until the end, I did not riot, I have lived in Indiana my whole life and I will be graduating in December from the School of Music. Most of the world has forgotten about the Knight "riots," so please do us all a favor and stop bringing it up.
