Kevin Ashley's "Guns should be allowed on campus (Jordan River Forum, March 8)" is both disturbing and misguided. Mr. Ashley seems to believe that the two people who were robbed on campus in early March could have prevented the offense if they had been allowed to carry a firearm on university grounds. But if they had attempted to use a gun to prevent the crime, it is just as possible that someone would have been injured or killed, an event much worse than a robbery.\nThe University's policy that bans guns from University property is warranted and wise. University students and employees should not need to worry about their fellow students and coworkers being armed. While this month's robbery was highly regrettable, it is something that rarely occurs on campus. It should not spur any movement to allow students to arm themselves to protect themselves from those infrequent violators. Doing so would inevitably lead to more cases of gun violence than the few that already occur.
