Pro-life mailing offends students

As a student who lives on campus, I understand that I am often the target of direct mailings. Most of it is surface-level junk mail that I can easily recycle without even a second glance. \nRecently, however, both my suitemate and I received envelopes addressed to "Resident" and the given address of our dormitory. A pamphlet was inside. On the cover were such phrases as "Right to choose" and "Reproductive rights" and so on. \nBut, what was disturbing was the inside of the pamphlet. The left panel stated something to the effect of "nice words," while the right panel included a horrific picture of a dead fetus. I am pro-choice, but even when shown to pro-life friends, all were in agreement that this display of political views is gruesome and uncalled for. \nJust as unsolicited e-mail (spam) has become illegal, so too should unsolicited mailings, especially those intended to directly shock and use scare tactics to influence reader opinion. The right to free speech must be protected, but so too must the right to privacy. It is my right to seek out whichever political views I like, and it is their right to believe whatever they like. But, it crosses the line when their views are put into my private mailbox so I must use my time and my space to review their opinions.\nJonathon Schuster\nSophomore
