Gallery starts year with new exhibits

Two new exhibitions will be featured in the School of Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibit, which opened last Friday will continue until Oct. 6. Featured are "Old Stories," paintings by Nancy Morgan-Barnes, and Robert Barnes' "Lunch Bags." The exhibit will kick off with an opening reception from 7-9 p.m. Friday in the SoFA Gallery. \n"Old Stories" is the retelling of ancient stories with modern revisions. Morgan-Barnes' concepts of chaos and order, youth and age, and friendship and adversity are at the center of her paintings. Stories, such as "Susanna and the Elders" and "The Story of Io," are retold with Morgan-Barnes' conceptualization of achieving the "struggle for balance in modern life," according to a press release.\nMorgan-Barnes' 30-year career has seen paintings exhibited throughout the United States and around the world.\nBarnes, a retired IU professor of painting, is a nationally recognized artist. Having been awarded a Fullbright scholarship and an National Endowment for the Arts grant, according to a press release, he wanted to make his most important students ' his daughters' ' school experiences positive.\nAs they grew up, he created a special lunch bag for them to take to school each day. Each bag has his daughters' name and a drawing that depicted family members and events. The bags tell stories and serve as a record of what was happening in their lives during this time. The exhibit will show an eclectic mix of art in a purely American genre. The exhibit is free to all patrons who wish to visit.\nFor further information, contact the SoFA Gallery by telephone (812) 855-8490, send an e-mail to sofa@indiana.edu or visit the website at http://www.fa.indiana.edu/~sofa. The SoFA Gallery is accessible to people with disabilities. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Thursday 12-4 p.m.; Friday 12-8 p.m.; weekends 1-4 p.m.; the SoFA Gallery is closed Mondays.
