Pokey LaFarge; The Bishop

Thursday, 9 PM

Humor us for a minute and imagine that you are in the early 20th century. You like music, and by this we mean that your Gramophone Top 20 playlist is mostly a collection of Jelly Role Mortons and Irving Berlins because you don't like this new age Duke Ellington or Vaudeville crap. You are 100 olde school. You are 100 per cent Americana. You are Pokey LaFarge. The name is real, in case you were wondering. From America's heartland (St. Louis, Missouri) Pokey is a preservation of pure American folk, a "bandleader, entertainer, and innovator." Imagine an indomitable wit, a high-profile performer (LaFarge has done a gig for Boardwalk Empire and recorded with musician Jack White. NBD) and a talented ethnomusicologist who didn't just explain what his major was, and you might get a sense of who Pokey LaFarge is. For a better sense, see the musician performer tomorrow at the Bishop.
