Two football walk-ons earn scholarships

Offensive lineman Dan Feeney lifts wide receiver Mitchell Paige after Paige scored against Purdue on Nov. 28, 2015 at Ross-Ade Stadium. The Hoosiers won 54-36.

Senior wide receiver Mitchell Paige and junior kicker Griffin Oakes received scholarships to play for the Hoosiers during the 2016 season, according to Twitter accounts of IU Football and junior quarterback Richard Lagow.

“(Shoutout) to my boys on getting those scholarships (Mitchell Paige) and (Griffin Oakes),” Lagow tweeted. “Y’all deserve it.”

The two walk-ons received two of the handful of scholarships available for walk-ons during the season. The rest of the scholarships will go toward the recruiting Class of 2017.

Oakes was named the Big Ten Kicker of the Year for the 2015 season, as he hit 24 of 29 field goals. He also set single-season IU kicking records in field goals made and total points by a kicker.

Oakes also missed the controversial overtime field goal to end the New Era Pinstripe Bowl against the Duke Blue Devils, 44-41.

Paige caught 57 passes for a team-high six touchdowns last season, and returned two punts for touchdowns. The receiver finished the season as a Big Ten Honrable Mention as a return specialist.
