For the second straight week, freshman Tyra Buss has been named Big Ten Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week.

Buss has played a major role in IU’s perfect 3-0 week, leading the team in scoring (18.3 points per game) and steals (4.0 steals per game). The freshman also added 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game last week while shooting 55.6 percent from the field.

Buss also entered the IU record books when broke a freshman record against Valparaiso last week with eight steals to join her career-high 22 points.

She won last week’s Freshman of the Week thanks to her contributions in the record-setting 115-54 victory over Gardner-Webb. Buss provided 18 points, seven steals, and five assists in that game.

Those numbers make her the Hoosiers’ season-leading scorer (18.3 points per game) and thief (4.8 steals per game) on 56.0 percent shooting.

Buss becomes the first Hoosier to win back-to-back Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors in program history. Sophomore Larryn Brooks won the award twice last year, but not in consecutive weeks.

While last week, Buss was the sole recipient of the award, this week she shares it with Illinois freshman Chatrice White.

Buss will next see action in the Hoosiers’ next game against East Tennessee State on Wednesday in Assembly Hall, where the Hoosiers will look to extend their season-opening win streak to five games.
