Kentucky senior QB Lorenzen ready to take on Hoosiers for 4th time

He's been called the 'Round-Mound of Touchdown.' He's been called 'mobile, agile, hostile and hungry.' He's senior Jared Lorenzen. He weighs 260 pounds. And he's the quarterback of the Kentucky Wildcats who are preparing to face IU this Saturday.

Regional rival Kentucky visits Memorial Stadium Saturday

In his second year at IU, coach Gerry DiNardo has yet to lead the football team to consecutive victories. But that could change when the Hoosiers play host to Kentucky 4 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium after beating Indiana State 33-3 last weekend. A win would secure bragging rights in one of IU's fiercest regional rivalries. "When coach DiNardo came in last year, he wasn't really sure about the rivalry," senior wide receiver Glenn Johnson said. "He didn't really know the meaning of it, but then when he saw how those guys played, he bought into it, and he saw where it was coming from, as far as it being a pretty intense game and you gotta go out and lay it all on the field against Kentucky."

Hoosiers head to Terre Haute

Today marks the 65th running of the Indiana Intercollegiates as the No. 18 women and No. 17 men's cross country teams travel to Terre Haute to compete on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course. This is the same course that hosted the 2002 NCAA National Championship meet in which the women's team finished 14th.

Colts short of sellout

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts are again racing against the clock to sell tickets. The team has until noon Thursday to avoid its fourth local television blackout in five games at the RCA Dome. Team officials said Wednesday that 6,200 tickets remained.

IU Athletic Hall of Fame to induct five former champs

Five former standout athletes from IU will be inducted into the IU Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony and dinner on Friday evening, according to Ricki Chastain of the Varsity Club. They will add to the already 119 members of the IU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Freeney doubtful for play Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney is likely to miss Sunday's game against Jacksonville and could miss more time because of a left ankle sprain. Freeney was injured during last Sunday's 33-7 victory over Tennessee.

Recreational sports program ranked No. 1

At IU there are about 38,000 students and roughly 87.5 percent have at one time or another participated in recreational sports. The high participation rate may be one reason Sports Illustrated On Campus listed IU as having the best recreational program in the country. IU was ranked sixth in "Best College Sports Towns." SIOC highlighted IU's prestigious basketball and football programs, but the light shone on the recreational sports program.

Coach inspires team success

Prior to 1993, the IU women's volleyball team had a dismal tradition. The program, which began in 1975, had never finished higher than fifth in Big Ten conference play and had never received a single vote in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. But 10 years ago, the athletic department took a chance on a coach that had only two years of head coaching experience. Under her guidance, the team has gone from one of the worst in the conference to a post-season team.

Freshmen stepping up for Hoosiers

It was 2nd and 16 from the Hoosier 20 yard line as Indiana State freshman quarterback Jake Schiff stood at the line looking for a hole in IU's defense to cut into the Hoosier's 16-3 lead. Freshman safety Will Meyers crept closer to the line of scrimmage as Schiff got ready to take the snap. As Schiff dropped back, Meyers blitzed through a wide-open hole in the left side of the ISU line. Schiff never saw Meyers coming as the Chesterfield, Mo., native blind-sided Schiff, forcing a fumble.

Search for Yeagley successor opens

FIFA's World Cup is played every four years. Eight World Cups have been played during Jerry Yeagley's tenure as coach of the IU men's soccer team. After this season, the Hoosiers will play soccer without the legendary coach in control. As difficult of a job it will be to replace Yeagley and his five NCAA championships, 12 Big Ten tournament championships and 31 years of coaching excellence at IU, who better to fill the shoes of the teacher other than the student he respects the most.

IU returns to site of Yeagley's first victory

Coach Jerry Yeagley returns to the site of his first career coaching victory tonight when the men's soccer team (2-2-2) battles Notre Dame at 7 p.m. in South Bend, Ind., at Alumni Field. Yeagley said he is aware of the challenge the Fighting Irish (2-1-2) present and added IU can't make any blunders against its in-state adversary. "Goals don't come easy against them," Yeagley said. "We're going to have to play close to the vest. It's going to be a chess match. They're good at forcing mistakes. We have to avoid mistakes against them. We can't make mistakes."

Bashore ready to break scoring record

Last year the IU field hockey team scored 22 goals in a total of 19 games. The leading scorer for the Hoosiers last year was senior Erica Nilsson who scored five goals. In just four games this year the Hoosiers totaled 14 goals, averaging three and a half per game.

After first win, IU awaits Wildcats

When freshman running back Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis scooted around left end for his second touchdown against Indiana State and his first 100-yard rushing day, sophomore left tackle Isaac Sowells and the rest of the offensive line could take pride in Green-Ellis' success. It had been five games since the Hoosiers had a running back eclipse the century mark.

Recruitment class grabs Indianapolis standout

The IU men's basketball team has solidified next year's recruiting class as one of the top in the country with the addition of Indianapolis North Central's A.J. Ratliff. The 6-foot-1 point guard verbally committed to Coach Mike Davis and the Hoosiers Sunday. "I went with what I decided to do," Ratliff said. "I talked to Coach Davis about my position with the team. I hope to be the leader of the group as the point guard. I've watched their games on TV and seen the crazy fans and hung out with some of the players."

Freshmen ready to lead the way

A few days before the soccer signing period, coach Mick Lyon said he was excited about this year's freshman class. The team had improved its record from 2001 and had a lot of players coming into the system. At the time, Lyon said it would be a great year for IU women's soccer. While the Hoosiers didn't find the instant success early this season, the past two games have helped give the team something to be excited about.

Peterson pushes to new heights

Running nearly 50 miles per week while taking summer classes is not normal for the average college student. But while most of the IU campus was home during the summer recess, junior Mindy Peterson stayed in Bloomington to focus on her upcoming cross country season doing just that. Peterson was an Academic All-Big Ten selection and IU's top finisher in every race during the 2002 season except for the Big Ten Championship. She ran a 6 kilometer personal record at the 2002 NCAA Championships with a 20:55 and was training this summer to prepare for the 2003 season. "All of the experience from last year is going to be very valuable for me this year as I race in Big Tens, Regionals and then NCAA's," Peterson said. "I think that the experience of nationals will be very beneficial to all of our runners." Peterson's workout partner for most of the summer was fellow teammate and senior Audrey Giesler. Not only did Peterson and Giesler train this past summer, but they have been training together since Peterson's freshman year.
