Column: Injuries aren’t the only explanation for loss

In one sense, it could be easy to accept IU’s 64-63 loss to Iowa. It’s injuries. It’s, for whatever reason, a bad matchup. It’s a hard-fought one-point loss. As IU coach Tom Crean said after the game, this team is lacking warm bodies for practice time.

Junior guard Verdell Jones’ jumpshot as time expired hit all iron, and a desperation tip came up empty as the Hoosiers fell to Iowa 64-63 on Saturday in Assembly Hall.

In IU’s 60-57 win, the junior forward scored 12 points, a total by any outside observer that doesn’t seem particularly noteworthy. Add seven rebounds and it still doesn’t seem enough to write home about.

Christian Watford out indefinitely

Sophomore forward Christian Watford is out indefinitely after suffering a broken left hand during the Hoosiers’ 84-83 loss to Michigan State on Sunday, IU coach Tom Crean announced Tuesday. Watford had surgery to repair the injury the same day.
