At the start of the 2013 Big Ten Championship race, no one was looking at the IU men’s cross-country team.Coach Ron Helmer knew it, but he said he wasn’t discouraged.
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams received bids to compete in the NCAA Championships on Saturday in Terra Haute.
This past Friday, the Indiana cross country team traveled to Madison, Wis., to compete in the Great Lakes Regional Meet.
IU Coach Ron Helmer and the cross country team will travel Friday to Madison, Wis., to compete in the Great Lakes Regional. The University of Wisconsin will have the race on their Thomas Zimmer Championships Cross Country Course.
This is Helmer’s first time winning the award for cross country in his seven years coaching cross country at IU.
The No. 24 ranked men’s cross country team will travel with the No. 21 women’s cross country team Sunday to West Lafayette to race in the Big Ten Championships.
Junior Kelsey Duerksen has landed her second Big Ten Athlete of the Week award this season. Tuesday’s National Coaches Poll has ranked Indiana’s women’s team at No. 21. They have not been nationally ranked since 2010.
Helmer said the majority of the freshmen who join IU’s men’s and women’s cross country teams are redshirted their first year, which allows him to help them adjust to collegiate cross country.
The Hoosiers’ cross country team competed in two races on Saturday. The women placed 12th as a team overall in the Adidas Invitational, and the men finished in 17th place.
The IU cross country team will have its hands full this weekend competing in two separate races. Part of the team will travel to Terre Haute to compete in Pre-Nationals at 11 a.m. Saturday.
IU Coach Ron Helmer will travel with the men’s and women’s cross country teams to compete in the Lehigh Paul Short Run at 10 a.m. Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa.
IU senior Samantha Ginther has returned to the IU women’s cross country team as an active runner after sitting out last year because of injuries.
