Miller said he is planning to study abroad in Brazil.

Batalha, a 2016-17 Fulbright Scholar, brought the group to IU after he discovered another Fulbright Scholar from Brazil, Guilherme Ribeiro, was visiting Jacobs School of Music this semester.

Batalha, a 2016-17 Fulbright Scholar, said Martins started the Orquestra nas Escolas program after her local government failed to provide adequate funding to improve music curriculum at local schools. Batalha said since the program began, he estimates it has helped over 10,000 students at various schools in Brazil.
Guilherme Ribeiro, who is visiting IU as a Fulbright Scholar, plays the accordion with the Brazilian ensemble Feb. 27 in the Musical Arts Center. Ribeiro is a professor at two universities in São Paulo, Brazil, where he teaches piano and accordion. “The accordion is a romantic instrument,” Ribeiro said. “You have to hug it.” Ribeiro said he enjoys the friendships he’s made and all the great musicians he’s met in the United States, but he said he is still adjusting to the cold weather.

Earlier in the day, the IU Latin American Ensemble played Cuban music for the Orquestra nas Escolas group, and the Brazilian ensemble played a style of Brazilian music called Chôro. The two groups played the song “Aquarela do Brasil” together.
