With limited fans allowed to attend Big Ten basketball games this season, IU lost one of its key advantages. In a normal season, Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is one of the toughest places to play, giving the Hoosiers a distinct advantage and providing the team with an added boost of energy throughout the game.

Sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis looked up at the scoreboard as the clock ticked down and mouthed the word “f---.” Sophomore guard Armaan Franklin draped a towel over his head as he walked toward the tunnel and off the court. The few clusters of Hoosier fans allowed to attend sat in near silence while the Purdue fans cheered.

IU men’s basketball’s game against Michigan State on Jan. 17 in East Lansing, Michigan, has been postponed due to an increase in COVID-19 cases within Michigan State’s program. The two schools will work with the Big Ten to reschedule the game, IU Athletics said in a press release Thursday.

It has been known since last season during his rise to stardom, IU lives and dies by the performance of sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis. IU head coach Archie Miller has repeatedly said throughout the season that IU will go as far as Jackson-Davis can take them, but to beat elite-level competition, IU’s role players need to play at a high level alongside the preseason All-American.

Halfway through the second half, junior guard Rob Phinisee sized up his defender before exploding from his spot, driving down the lane. As the defense collapsed on him, he flung a cross-court pass to a wide-open senior guard Al Durham set up in the right corner. Durham confidently rose up and drained the 3-pointer.

Junior forward Race Thompson pulled down the defensive rebound and launched the ball down court to a streaking sophomore Armaan Franklin. He received the pass in the left corner and immediately threw the ball into the post to what appeared to be a wide-open sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis. Instead of an easy layup that would have cut Illinois lead to two points, the pass was deflected off the backboard, sparking a fastbreak.

As the ball sailed wide of the rim after the final buzzer sounded, sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis fell to his knees in a combination of exhaustion and disappointment. After starting overtime with a bang, spinning through a double-team and converting the layup while getting fouled, IU’s offense appeared to regain some of the confidence it lost in the final minutes of regulation.
