The chants of “Fire Archie” rained down on the court as IU went nearly the last 10 minutes of its season without making a shot in its 61-50 Big Ten Tournament loss to Rutgers. IU Athletic Director Scott Dolson sat on the baseline underneath the basket with his eyes glued to the court, not once looking around at the crowd calling for him to take drastic action.

Whenever the topic came up of how difficult it was playing this season, both head coach Archie Miller and the IU men’s basketball team would often talk about not being able to play with fans and what had been lost without them. They’d talk about how the team would feed off the energy provided by IU’s fans and how weird it was to have a highlight play followed by near silence.

On IU’s first possession of the second half, sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis received an entry pass one stride inside the 3-point line. The Preseason All-American waited for the Spartan double-team to pass before he backed down his man into the middle of the paint, making a quick move and draining the hook shot over his right shoulder.

Since coming to Bloomington three years ago, junior guard Rob Phinisee has been given a tremendous amount of responsibility within IU men’s basketball. From his first game in 2018 as a freshman, Phinisee has been a leader for the Hoosiers as a three-year starter.

After dribbling off a screen from junior Race Thompson at the top of the key, junior guard Rob Phinisee peaked around his defender before lobbing the ball towards the rim. On the other end of the lob, sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis skied through the air before slamming down the alley-oop with two hands for the Hoosiers’ first points of the night as they went on to defeat the Golden Gophers 82-72.

The opening minutes of the game have defined IU men’s basketball over the past few months. The Hoosiers start games slowly, missing shots and putting a lot of pressure on the defense to contain their opponent long enough for the team to find its rhythm and climb out of the hole they’ve often found themselves in.

Just two steps past midcourt, Ohio State sent a double-team to trap freshman guard Khristian Lander. Instead of collecting himself and finding senior guard Al Durham sprinting to his rescue, Lander tried to split the double-team before losing control of the ball and throwing it away, leading to an easy fast break layup for the Buckeyes.

With 24 seconds left in regulation, senior guard Al Durham took one hard dribble before he drove down the left wing, looking to attack the basket. Suddenly, the senior guard stopped as he pulled up to release the game-tying floater to force overtime. Two overtimes later, the Hoosiers would go on to win 79-76 in Evanston, Illinois, for the first time since 2014.

The Big Ten Conference officially announced Tuesday that the 2021 men’s conference tournament will be relocated to Indianapolis. The tournament will be played in Lucas Oil Stadium, according to a press release.

The last time IU men’s basketball played Iowa, it pulled off the team’s biggest upset of the season and one of head coach Archie Miller’s biggest wins in his four years in Bloomington. It was a statement win for the Hoosiers, who were coming off a late-game collapse in which they fell to in-state rival Purdue 81-69 the week before.

IU men’s basketball fell in overtime 75-71 Tuesday against No. 12 Illinois in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers scored just 30 points in the second half and overtime after leading at halftime 41-34.
