In the last month, the COVID-19 vaccine has become available to most Hoosiers. As a vulnerable group facing great exposure to the virus, there is no doubt that people experiencing homelessness deserve equal access to the vaccine.

The COVID-19 pandemic proves education in Indiana is a privilege and not equally accessible to everyone. Although school systems were able to develop ways to continue educating students during the pandemic, one form of education has seemingly been forgotten: education programs in jails.

Last weekend, more than 100 activists filled Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, protesting the recent overthrow of Myanmar’s democratic government by the Myanmar military. Indiana is home to one of the largest Burmese refugee populations in the United States, so a formal position against Myanmar's recent military rule is needed, whether through statements by Indiana legislatures or Indiana universities.

During a harsh, Indiana winter, the Bloomington Police Department destroyed multiple encampments inhabited by individuals experiencing homelessness under the direction of Mayor John Hamilton. The Bloomington community voiced their concerns in a city council meeting Jan. 14, but the police continued to remove shelters and other large objects from Seminary Park — an act of pure hate that proves devastating to a vulnerable community.

Amid the seemingly never-ending void of unknowingness felt while awaiting the 2020 election results, my social media feed was crowded with various political disputes between President Donald Trump’s supporters and President-elect Joe Biden’s supporters. Debated amongst my followers was the concept of respecting the dichotomy of opinions held during one of the most divisive elections in our nation’s history. One viewpoint held, no matter the political opinion, mature politics constitutes a mutual respect for that opinion, or unity. The opposition asserts that human rights issues do not mandate mutual respect, nor constitute unity.

As I watched Simon Spier kiss his first boyfriend on the Ferris wheel in the concluding scene of the LGBTQ+ film, “Love Simon,” I dreamed of the day I started dating as an openly gay man. I soon realized that dating as a gay man differs immensely from a Hollywood blockbuster. As a freshman at IU, I was introduced to a seemingly fundamental aspect of the gay dating scene — dating apps.

The first time I heard the phrase “First Gentlemen,” I was watching Pete Buttigieg’s campaign announcement in April 2019. As I sat on the velvet, green couch in my parents’ living room, I witnessed the first openly gay Democratic presidential candidate proudly kiss his husband on stage. A newfound sense of reassurance embraced me, a sense of reassurance that was unknown to me in my small Indiana town. When the announcement ended, tears filled my eyes.

From the Indiana Statehouse to the White House, Vice President Mike Pence has remained consistent in his blatant homophobia. Demonstrated by a career of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and legislation disguised as a dedication to religious liberty, Pence’s career propagated anti-LGBTQ+ notions into Americans, with grave consequences for future LGBTQ+ equality.

In response to the tragic, brutal death of George Floyd in May, IU President Michael McRobbie released a statement on IU’s commitment to diversity and equity. The message contained various calls to action, such as an emphasis on diminishing inherent ignorance by staying informed on present-day racism and its connection to this country’s history of racist acts.

A recent whistleblower complaint alleged immigrant detainees underwent hysterectomies, a kind of sterilization where the uterus is removed, without consent while in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody at a private detention center in Georgia. Dawn Wooten, a nurse at the facility, filed the complaint which also addressed fabricated detainee medical records and deplorable COVID-19 procedures. ICE’s abhorrent misconduct is evidence the eugenics movement is still brewing in the United States.

An apocalyptic, orange glow currently presides over the West — the result of catastrophic wildfires enraged by climate change. An unprecedented, world-wide pandemic is plaguing the United States. Protesters are taking to the streets as a result of exacerbated, horrifically violent police brutality against the Black community and other communities of color. The necessity of an empathetic, perceptive conversation is unparalleled.
