When the Dunn Family, donated part of their land to Indiana University, they did so with one stipulation: that a specific tree, which had the initials of sweethearts from the Dunn family carved into the trunk, located on the property remain standing in the exact same spot where it had always been. When IU built the Chemistry Building they had to come up with a building plan that would not disturb the tree. So, they built around the tree and created a outside deck/courtyard area in the center of the Chemistry Building where the tree resides. In addition to the initials of the Dunn family, the tree now features initials and names of several generations of IU students.
The bronze statue of former IU President and Chancellor Herman B. Wells, which is located in the open air pavilion near the Rose Well House, was installed in 2000, the same year that Wells passed away. Wells is credited with elevating the status of Indiana University and the statue serves to commemorate the accomplishments brought to the university by Wells. However, there is one "hidden" fact. The sculptor who created the statue is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota, a Big Ten rival of IU's and so to remain faithful to his roots, he carved "University of Minnesota- Go Gophers," out of sight, under the brim of Wells' hat.

Current IU President Michael McRobbie married his wife, First Lady Laurie Burns-McRobbie, at Beck Chapel in 2005.
