Bloomington’s premier eclipse celebration took place at Memorial Stadium from 1-5 p.m. Monday. It featured performances and speeches from “Star Trek” actor William Shatner, astronaut Mae Jemison, and grammy-nominated R&B and pop singer Janelle Monáe, as well as several IU performing arts ensembles.

With the solar eclipse passing right over Bloomington, it’s been the talk of the town for the last few months now. Hearing about it reminded me of the times there were solar eclipses when I lived in Bangalore, India, and how I would usually spend those days. My father was always greatly intrigued by space and all its wondrous spectacles, from galaxies to black holes to solar and lunar eclipses.

IU First Nations Educational and Cultural Center canceled its 2024 Traditional Powwow as both IU and the larger Bloomington community prepare to participate in events for the solar eclipse, according to a press release from the office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion on Jan. 22.

IU recently held its Indiana University Student Government elections. As a first-time voter in those elections, I appreciated how many options I had to choose from and how easy it was to vote. With the 2024 presidential election on the horizon, it’s important to discuss how voting can be easier and more reflective of our values. It is increasingly evident election reform is needed at multiple levels.
