To celebrate the fall season, Bloomington Parks & Recreation will put on a pumpkin launching event 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 21 at Monroe County Fairgrounds. Audience members have to pay $10 per vehicle. Entrance to the event will begin at 11 a.m. and pumpkin launching will start at noon.

IU English professor Angela Jackson-Brown loves talking about history. Her newest historical fiction book, “Homeward,” launched Oct. 10 at the Indiana Memorial Union. The book is set in 1963 Georgia and features recreations of famous civil rights leaders such as John Lewis, Medgar Evers and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Hoosier Hills Food Bank will host the Bloomington Community Book Fair starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 7 p.m. Oct. 12-13 and 6 p.m. Oct. 14-17 at the Monroe County Fair Grounds. The book fair is made up of community donations and will offer over 100,000 items ranging from rare and collectible books to children's books. It will also sell DVDs, CDs and other forms of media, all for affordable prices.

Step Afrika! will open IU Auditorium’s 2023-2024 season with an electrifying performance at 8 p.m. Oct. 7 at the auditorium on Seventh Street. The show will feature a lively production of songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation.

On Saturday, before the Waldron, Hill and Buskirk Park grass patches filled with picnic blankets and lawn chairs, volunteers for the Lotus Education and Arts Foundation’s 30th festival set up their tent stations. The event included artist lectures and demonstration workshops, live performances on Lotus’ main stage and visual arts activities in the artists camp from noon-5 p.m.

The Bloomington Poetry Slam’s co-host Andrea Sterling took to the stage in her red one-piece pantsuit with sparkles purposefully laid on her cheekbones and shoulders. The words she spoke were of heartbreak and longing, power and regret. It was a cool Friday evening on Sept. 15, 2023, fall just around the corner. Next door, upbeat music could be heard through the wall from the bar side of The Bishop Bar. On this side were poets taking in the words of one another.

Bloomington locals and IU students gathered for free live music and hot air balloon rides at 7 p.m. Thursday evening in Dunn Meadow during the fifth annual Lotus in the Meadow outdoor concert. IU Late Nite and the Indiana Memorial Union partnered with the Lotus Festival to host the event.

Fourth Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts celebrated all mediums of artwork Saturday and Sunday from Indiana Avenue to Lincoln Street. People of all ages crowded the streets, and musicians could be heard on stage from blocks away.
