This December, celebrate the holiday season by visiting the theater for a night of winter fun.
The Bloomington Alternative Media Festival will have their annual festival celebrating independent publishing from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Harmony School. The festival is made up of local artists and will feature comics, books and zines.
IU alumnus Don Gene Bell’s lifetime of artwork fills the walls of the IU’s University Collections at the McCalla School gallery as visitors walk through the physical representations of his creativity. Bell passed away in September 2020 and his art was recovered from Tucson, Arizona by Kathryn Chattin, director of Campus Art and associate director of University Collections at McCalla, in the summer of 2022.

Sculpture artist Jeff Koons will participate in a panel discussion at 4 p.m. Nov. 5 in IU’s Fine Arts Building. The Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art announced the event, titled “At the Intersection of Art and Technology: A Conversation with Jeff Koons,” will feature Koons and two IU professors.
Former Bloomington musicians John P. Strohm and Freda Love Smith met during their teenage years and will return to Morgenstern Books to celebrate Strohm’s recently released album and Smith’s recently published memoir. There will be a conversation, reading and acoustic performance at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at Morgenstern Books.
Kiwanis Indiana, a local non-profit, will hold its annual balloon festival this weekend at the Monroe County fairgrounds. The three-day event is a fundraiser for youth programs in South Central Indiana.

To celebrate the fall season, Bloomington Parks & Recreation will put on a pumpkin launching event 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 21 at Monroe County Fairgrounds. Audience members have to pay $10 per vehicle. Entrance to the event will begin at 11 a.m. and pumpkin launching will start at noon.

IU English professor Angela Jackson-Brown loves talking about history. Her newest historical fiction book, “Homeward,” launched Oct. 10 at the Indiana Memorial Union. The book is set in 1963 Georgia and features recreations of famous civil rights leaders such as John Lewis, Medgar Evers and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
There may be no better time to be a cinephile than in October, and this month Constellation Stage and Screen is bringing cult-classic Halloween films to Bloomington with three screening events.

The Hoosier Hills Food Bank will host the Bloomington Community Book Fair starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 7 p.m. Oct. 12-13 and 6 p.m. Oct. 14-17 at the Monroe County Fair Grounds. The book fair is made up of community donations and will offer over 100,000 items ranging from rare and collectible books to children's books. It will also sell DVDs, CDs and other forms of media, all for affordable prices.
