I’m from Indiana, so I know firsthand why people think the Midwest of the United States can be passed up. Some people will tell you they can’t even distinguish between all of the “I” states – Iowa, Indiana, Illinois — so why stop here? I’m tired of seeing Instagram post after Instagram post slam the Midwest as a flyover country. In the heartland, you’ll find more than cornfields and windmills. Woven within the crossroads are great cities, delicious food, interesting attractions and friendly faces.

Maria Amanda Irias: Why is it socially acceptable to grunt at the gym? Some people — mostly men — think it’s ok to grunt while they lift weights, but it's not. It's so unnecessary to make noises while you exercise. I don’t care how much of a “gym bro” you think you are, grunting should be unacceptable. Plus, if you have the need to grunt because the weights you’re lifting are that heavy, then maybe you should do a couple pounds less. You’re just straining your muscles. The need to grunt is a sign you’re lifting too much, so fix it and don’t make us listen to your struggles.

The January weather brings dreary skies, naked trees and sullen raindrops into view. It’s a somber sight and keeps me hibernating indoors, waiting out the cold of winter. For some reason, this time inside spent drinking green tea and scrolling through social media under a mound of blankets pushes me to reflect on the past.

North Carolinian country artist, Kameron Marlowe, performed his songs to an incredibly resilient crowd. On Sunday, Jan. 21, fans waited outside The Bluebird Nightclub, shivering in line as they waited to be let in to attend the show, which is part of the Kameron Marlowe: I Can Lie Tour.

IU’s student-governed organization “Bring Your Own Business” held its first yard sale of the spring semester from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Indiana Memorial Union’s Stateroom East. The club, dedicated to student entrepreneurship and sustainability, has been hosting yard sale events as an opportunity for students to earn money since September 2022.

As the temperatures start dropping, so do our dopamine levels. Cold weather and a gloomy look around us bring many individuals seasonal depression. With the sun setting at 5 p.m., before many of us are even done for the day, it feels like our day has been wasted and we have no choice but to rot in our beds. There are many ways to combat the feelings of seasonal depression and to get out of your cold weather slump.

When one thinks of grocery stores, sprawling, packed aisles may come to mind. Dozens of yard-long shelves, each devoted to a single product - a myriad of choices ready to satisfy every consumer desire possible. This could be a great display of how capitalism in America is purported to work: a characterization of the free market, as competition between hundreds of brands helps regulate prices, quality, working conditions,and supply and demand. Unfortunately, this abundance isn’t what it seems — and there are more consequences than meets the eye.
