McCool and team president John Shean glance at their watches as the Cutters catch their breath following the team's first full-contact practice at Bloomington South. “This is becoming our core group. Men, you gotta get that intensity up,” McCool says. “You think the Kentucky Xtreme are gonna take it easy on us?”

"Ever seen somebody holding a live frag grenade?" Sgt. McCool asked. "Here you go. That's Iraq." In his nine years, five months and five days enlisted in the Army, Sgt. McCool deployed to Kosovo once and to Iraq twice - first during the Battle of Fallujah and next to Baghdad. Now a student at Indiana University, McCool has assumed the role of head coach for the Indiana Cutters semi-pro football team, furthering his love for a sport he enjoyed playing before the war.

McCool surveys his team as the first Cutters camp nears two hours of grueling conditioning and running drills. He looks around at his men. "We got a couple of studs that'll do alright, but for some it's a reality check that 'I'm not in shape,'" he said. "We’re getting down to business. What that means, guys, is when you come to practice, you’re ready to work, ok? Don’t hang out, don’t sit on the side, don’t get some shade. Work. That’s what we’re here for."

McCool gives instructions to his captain Nick Land during the Cutters' first camp. Land's hamstring problems prevented him from rigorous directional running drills this early in the season. "Gotta be doing something, coach," Land says as McCool approaches. "That's right," McCool replies. "Good man."

"You don't pay, you don't play. That's how it goes," McCool said to Antwon Smith, left, as Team President John Shean and former Bloomington South football coach Grier Werner look on. Players pay a $150 fee to join the roster, and until Smith and others settle up on past-due fees, McCool won't even have them on the practice field. The Cutters operate as a non-profit organization, so player fees and merchandise sales are the team's only source of income. All staff and coaches - McCool included - don't make a dime.

"Who was on the team last year, championship game?" McCool asks his players at the team's first meeting. "How bad did that suck to lose? That sucked. I hate that feeling worse than anything in the world. This year we need to fix that." With strong veteran captains and a good mix of new and returning players, McCool is confident his men have what it takes to win it all. “Why are you guys here? You want to win the championship?" McCool asked. “Yes, sir," his men replied.

"I don’t play anymore because of my injuries. I know I could play, but it wouldn’t be a good choice. I should just use my knowledge for the game," McCool said. "With a traumatic brain injury it wouldn’t be wise to take a shot." McCool came back from war 70% disabled after being hit by two IEDs. The G.I. Bill and Veteran Disability Compensation cover his tuition and livelihood, but don't do much for the chronic pain that requires regular medical check-ups.
