OPINION: This week’s hot takes
Jack Davis: Not only do I dislike Pepsi, but restaurants should not be allowed to sell Pepsi products. In my opinion, it’s by far the inferior soda option, and the only Pepsi product that should be sold is Starry — because who doesn’t love lemon-lime soda? However, they got the other sodas all wrong.
OPINION: TikTok should be reformed – not banned
My TikTok is a space for me to keep up with activists, find book recommendations and follow my favorite beauty influencers. But to the U.S. government, TikTok is a potential tool for the Communist Party of China to spy on Americans and influence the news we receive.

OPINION: This week’s spring break hot takes
Jack Davis: I don’t think spring break always needs to be some extravagant trip. Sure, you should enjoy yourself, but sometimes it’s nice to take a break. It’s okay to go home for spring break, sleep in and see old friends.
OPINION: How to understand and navigate burnout in times of stress and chaos
Amidst the craze of midterms, times of political uproar and my looming graduation, I’m experiencing an unprecedented amount of anxiety, difficulty concentrating and a lack of motivation to work on assignments. I’m tired and dread going to class everyday. While this level of burnout can seem scary, it’s a pervasive problem affecting a lot of the working population.
OPINION: The beauty standard is a damaging function of capitalism and media consumption
Hollywood films have always used undeniably beautiful actors to appeal to viewers. This is a direct effect of the phenomenon of pretty privilege in society, where good-looking people are perceived as smarter, healthier and more successful. In a society obsessed with appearance, of course Hollywood executives are going to cast pretty people to sell more tickets.
OPINION: This week's hot takes
Jack Davis: People packing up 10-15 minutes before class ends is silly. The professor gives us hours of their time each week, so the least we can do is sit through the final 15 minutes of class, humoring them without all the rustling of our backpacks.

OPINION: Celebrities should be held accountable for their actions
As a self-proclaimed pop culture enthusiast, I spend a lot of time listening to music, reading, watching TV and consuming all the information I can about my favorite celebrities. And, in my consumption of media, I’ve come to idolize more than a few famous people. If an artist makes good music, is charismatic and offers some sort of relatability in their work, I’m hooked.
OPINION: This week’s Valentine’s Day hot takes
Erin Stafford: While it’s true that we should celebrate our loved ones all the time, Valentine’s Day is also the perfect opportunity to make some grand gesture or plan an incredibly romantic date for your significant other. I’m talking champagne, rose petals on the bed and a candlelit dinner for two. It feels good to be spoiled! And what better time than the day of love and romance?
OPINION: Generation Alpha’s investment in beauty is harmful, but it doesn’t have to be
I didn’t seriously think about skincare until I entered high school. Sure, I washed and moisturized my skin with drugstore brands like Cetaphil and CeraVe, but by no means did I adopt a regimen of toners and serums until much later. Given my adolescent self’s lack of knowledge on skincare and beauty, it’s absolutely wild to see how intense and thorough the skincare and makeup routines of kids are today.
OPINION: This week’s hot takes
Maria Amanda Irias: Why is it socially acceptable to grunt at the gym? Some people — mostly men — think it’s ok to grunt while they lift weights, but it's not. It's so unnecessary to make noises while you exercise. I don’t care how much of a “gym bro” you think you are, grunting should be unacceptable. Plus, if you have the need to grunt because the weights you’re lifting are that heavy, then maybe you should do a couple pounds less. You’re just straining your muscles. The need to grunt is a sign you’re lifting too much, so fix it and don’t make us listen to your struggles.
OPINION: The paradox of nostalgia: Can our obsession with the past hurt us?
The January weather brings dreary skies, naked trees and sullen raindrops into view. It’s a somber sight and keeps me hibernating indoors, waiting out the cold of winter. For some reason, this time inside spent drinking green tea and scrolling through social media under a mound of blankets pushes me to reflect on the past.
OPINION: What I learned about love from long-distance dating
I’ve been with my partner for over five years, and about four of those have been spent living a plane ride away from each other.
OPINION: This week’s hot takes
Leila Faraday: I find no electronics policies in lectures to be extremely frustrating. Everyone has their own system of taking and organizing notes, and we, as adults and paying students, should be able to exercise personal discretion when it comes to these systems. If a student wants to scroll through Instagram throughout lecture, that is their free will, and they are the ones who will deal with the natural consequences.
OPINION: This land is not ours: Thoreau and the commodification of nature
Nature has always been a grounding force for me. Walking, hiking and spending time outside helps me escape the never-ending cycle of work and socialization that keeps my brain in a constant state of hyperactivity. Only in nature can I truly let everything go.
OPINION: This week's hot takes: editors edition
Salomé Cloteaux, editor-in-chief: Every time I complain about IU parking, I am met with the same responses: “There isn’t enough space to have parking for everyone on campus. Why don’t you just walk or bike or take the bus or ride a scooter? Don’t you want Bloomington to become more walkable and less reliant on cars?” But when it’s 11 p.m., I’m finally leaving work, the buses aren’t running, my bike got stolen twice in one month, there has been another e-scooter accident, I don’t make enough money to get an Uber every day, my car got towed because although I paid almost $200 for an ST parking pass, I was late to move my car from the stadium the night before the third basketball home game this week, and I have to pray my roommate is still awake to pick me up so I have a safe way home, I think I have a right to complain about IU parking.
OPINION: This week's hot takes
Jack Davis: I don’t want to see everyone’s Spotify Wrapped. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-Spotify Wrapped; I think it is a neat idea, and I personally enjoy seeing mine. But if I want to see yours, I’ll ask you to show me. When it comes out, it feels like every single story on Instagram is people's Spotify Wrapped.
OPINION: This week’s Thanksgiving hot takes
Jack Davis: The best traditional Thanksgiving food is the dinner roll. There is nothing better than warm and fluffy bread coming out of the oven on Thanksgiving Day. I also like dipping it in the mashed potatoes.
