Nathan Finney, the owner of several well-known Bloomington businesses, died in a small aircraft accident Nov. 22 near the Shelbyville Municipal Airport. Finney’s pilot and flight instructor, Warren Bruhl, also died in the accident.

Monroe County declared a local disaster emergency and put in place a burn ban because of drought conditions Monday. Penny Githens, president of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, declared the ban, which is effective until Nov. 20 unless further ordered by the Board of Commissioners.

In the flashing red and blue light of police cars, students in support of Israel and students in support of Palestine faced off at Sample Gates on Monday night, separated by a line of police officers. For 20 minutes, both groups waved their flags, chanted and yelled at each other — the tense culmination of a night that began with two peaceful gatherings.

A five-year-old boy from Rogers Elementary School in Bloomington passed away from an unknown illness on the morning of Sept. 29. The Monroe County Health Department began an investigation and has ruled out bacterial meningitis, but not other life-threatening bacterial infections or viral meningitis. Tests are pending to determine if there is any public health threat.

Three Little 500 cyclists have been hit by cars in three separate crashes this week causing non-life-threatening injuries to bikers on the Greek teams Beta Sigma Psi, Phi Mu and Phi Kappa Psi. All three crashes occurred in a span of just three days.

The Indiana Supreme Court voted to uphold Senate Enrolled Act 1, which bans abortions except for in limited cases, Monday. In August 2022 Indiana passed a near-total abortion ban, which has been unable to take effect until now. The ruling comes three weeks after the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, which represented abortion clinics in the state, filed a petition to halt the near-total ban.
