Black History Month this year was a bit underwhelming.
Musical artist and actress Awkwafina is yet again under scrutiny for her use of a "blaccent" and her subsequent apology. While I don't aim to go over the many issues defining her career, her latest public debacle and apology made me stop and think.
In the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. was reviled. Even shortly before his murder, as many as 63% of Americans found him unfavorable. The FBI even went so far as to attempt to goad him to commit suicide with a now scandalous letter, as well as putting MLK under intense surveillance. Soon thereafter, he was assassinated.
Popular streaming platform Twitch is no stranger to controversy surrounding hate speech content. There are hundreds of thousands of streamers and millions of viewers on the platform. With so many users, it's difficult to moderate and manage everything that is said, so when the website takes action, it sets a rather large precedent.
It wasn't the storming of the U.S. Capitol that scared me a year ago, it was the sinking feeling that nothing of value would change because of it.
Diversity is a core construct at Indiana University, and by its own metrics, the Bloomington campus is getting more diverse each year. With that said, it's no secret the university is overwhelmingly white, with 72.8% of students being white, according to IU's diversity report of 2021. I've written before about how IU tries to mitigate this metric, but numbers can only tell so much of the story.

On Nov. 30th, Barbados will finally depose Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. This comes 394 years after the first British colony was established in the island nation in 1627. Just as this news was announced, the Queen was revealed to have been recently hospitalized.
