____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Watching a fashion show is like seeing a fairy tale unfold – with slender supermodels as the heroines and outrageous fashions as the costumes. The unfortunate truth is that some trends are best left to fairy tales. Remember Jean Paul Gaultier’s cone-shaped bras back in the good old 1990s? That only worked on Madonna. With countless options to choose from, it is becoming more difficult by
the season to pick flattering pieces that will suit your particular
shape.
To make it easier for you, we spent hours toiling over today’s top
trends and came up with tips on looking skinny without sacrificing
style.
Let’s get to it:1.One of the most crucial things you should take away from this column is the importance of streamlining. You always want to make a continuous line, which gives the illusion of a longer leg and, therefore, a leaner silhouette. A definite faux pas is leggings that fall short of your boot, giving the impression of a chopped-up leg. A simple fix to this problem is to add tights that match the color of your shoes, creating a longer, leaner look.2.When wearing jeans keep in mind that lighter and brighter usually equals heftier and chubbier. Gray jeans add to the width of your leg while a dark wash is a sure way to subtract pounds. Heels and boots are a skinny jean’s best friend; flats, on the other hand contribute to a short and squat figure. Lastly, beware of bulky sweaters. When worn appropriately these can really add the “umph” factor to your outfit, but when worn incorrectly, they can sabotage it. Try to pair them with a skinny, body-conscious dark jean or legging. Adding a pair of heels wouldn’t hurt either. 3.Sweater dresses are a tricky trade. Making them work for your body without accidentally adding heft to your shape can be difficult. This look is best dressed up. Instead of bare legs, use one of our tips and try dark tights paired with a tall wedged boot. Be careful not to get that chopped-legged look by wearing a mid-calf boot or leggings. Or forget about the sweater dress and try sporting a high-waisted skirt with a streamlined top. Complete the look with a corset belt and a pair of simple heels.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>During the Great Depression, fashion was put on the back burner because of the poor economic climate. Because Americans were forced to ration fabric, fashionable women used their sewing skills to alter their clothes and update them in creative ways to keep up with the trends. Women today are faced with similar challenges. There are tons of ways to stay stylish on a budget if you can think outside the box.A few simple modifications and a resourceful imagination are all you need to completely resurrect your wardrobe. Adding accessories, cinching your silhouette, enhancing old looks with trendier pieces or altering outdated items to make them more modern are just a few tricks you can use to spice up your options. We came up with a few key ideas that you can copy and incorporate into your own closet. 1. Cinch shapeless silhouettes. We took a mod vintage shift dress and made it more sophisticated by adding an embellished waist-cinching belt, pearl drop earrings, a cocktail ring and a more flattering luggage-colored platform heel. Have any baby doll or sack dresses from a few seasons ago? This is a fantastic way to update these outdated pieces.2. Reuse outdated items. If you still think exposing your muffin top is cute, you’re seriously delusional, because ew. However, you don’t have to donate short tops to Plato’s Closet just yet. Reuse these usually unflattering pieces by wearing them with a high-waisted skirt or pant for a much more flattering look. Feel free to accessorize with bangles, earrings and a killer high heel.3.Glam up a simple piece. The last few seasons we’ve been seeing a very simple, shapeless silhouette, but this spring brings a more tailored, accessorized feel. We took a cocktail dress from a few seasons ago and vamped it up by adding a cropped fur coat, opaque tights, patent Mary Janes, a chunky pearl bracelet and earrings. Check out local stores like Bella Donna or Urban Outfitters to stock up on fun jewelry and accessories to update your wardrobe, or browse Cactus Flower for some unique vintage pieces. Stay classy, IU!

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>As a business major, I’m often asked by readers and friends why I’m so passionate about the fashion industry. When I interview for business-related positions, recruiters seem to find it funny to ask if I wandered into the wrong room. Sometimes, even I wonder why I’m so dedicated to an industry in which so many seem to think I don’t belong. But then I stumble upon the Giambattista Valli aqua-dyed lamb skirt suit with dyed-to-match Saga fox fur trim in a Saks catalogue and fall in love with the fashion industry all over again.I flip the page and see an immaculate silver/grey silk, duchess satin chinchilla print dress. It’s belted with tights, pumps and a matching silk scarf – worldly. You complain about the price tag, while I see the many hours that go into creating every designer piece, the quality of fabric and the intrigue of the design. You say that fashion is cruel, and I say it’s economical. Not only is a fur vest going to keep you warm in freezing temperatures, but you can save on heating expenses by wearing it inside your home. You insist fashion doesn’t relate to you – well in that case, I just think you’re stupid. So, as winter vacation rolls around, don’t be afraid to pick up a Saks or a Nordstrom catalogue and splurge on a few pieces. Get that lambswool, tiered Yves Saint Laurent dress you had your eyes on or a Black Tibet lambskin Chanel bag.Don’t discount the important fact that even designer goods go on sale. So if you shop right, you can find amazing deals. I have a friend who recently purchased a pair of Christian Louboutin heels for hundreds of dollars less than suggested retail price, and her stories only get better and better with each deal. These deals, however, won’t come knocking on your door – you have to find them. Frequently visit your favorite stores. That way you will be the first to catch your favorite items on sale.Don’t forget to make a plan of attack. And keep in mind that spring is just around the corner, so start planning accordingly. There are quite a few spring shows I fell in love with, but none more than Chanel’s spring ready-to-wear. I strongly advise you to take a few minutes and watch the entire fashion show, which can be found on Chanel.com. Mr. Lagerfeld really outdid himself this time around, and I just can’t wait for the next show. Check out the trend forecasts and style blogs on style.com for spring wardrobe advice and inspiration.Good luck on the finals, enjoy your vacation and, as always, stay classy, IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>You’ve seen it on style.com, you’ve read it in top fashion magazines and you’ve heard it from me. If there is one concept that has been mentioned over and over again this season, it is versatility. From the timeless Chanel suit to a bulky sweater cardigan at Carson Pirie Scott, everyone is thinking double duty this season. With the economy taking a turn for the worse, the fashion industry is seeing a rapid emergence of the Recessionistas – who are spending less and browsing more. As one-time wear will no longer do it, consumers are now in search of pieces that can be worn on multiple occasions. Your jacket is an example of a versatile piece. A good quality jacket will no doubt serve you well and last several seasons. A chic trench can sometimes even be worn as a piece itself, with leggings and a pair of pumps. A knee-length sweater cardigan is another great piece to have in your winter wardrobe collection. What I find really sexy are the girls who pair a men’s button-up with a pair of skinny’s, the knee-length sweater cardigan and a pair of cute flats. It’s a very relaxed feel but chic nonetheless. You can take that same cardigan and pair it with a high-waisted skirt or wide-legged pant with a romantic blouse and achieve a professional look. With a cardigan in your closet, your next step is to invest in a sheath dress. This is probably my favorite piece for the season. It is easy to wear, easy to mix and it is versatile – so much, in fact, that you can wear it to class or to your next formal.A simple sheath dress paired with a stunning necklace and pair of diamond earrings will grant you access to any fashionable formal, while a belted sheath dress, possibly with leggings and casual pumps paired with a trench looks amazing going to class. Keep in mind that berry variations are the way to go this season as far as color is concerned. Jewelry can help change the feel of your outfit instantaneously. Here’s a little advice that will carry you a long way fashion-wise: Silver is just as good as gold, but you need to know when it is appropriate to wear. Gold attracts a lot of attention, so unless you’re going to a place or an event that requires it, you might rethink the gold choice. On the other hand, silver has the power to take an otherwise dressy outfit and immediately make it more casual. Take the sheath dress, for example. Throw on some gold pieces, and you’ve got that elegant, dressy feel to your look. Now take that same sheath dress and add a couple sliver necklaces and silver bangles, and you’ve got that going-to-class casual look. Very different, but they both work. Of course, don’t forget the essential pieces such as a pair of jeans, wide-legged pants, T-shirts, blouses, bags, etc., but make sure to add the pieces I mentioned above to your collection. And don’t just buy the first cardigan or sheath dress you stumble upon – be careful in your selection and buy a good quality item, even if it sets you back a couple hundred dollars. Stay classy, IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>This past Friday, the Wall Street Journal’s Home Front featured the Tuscan villa of designer Frida Giannini, the creative mind behind Gucci’s revamped image. The Italian designer, who is known for looking into Gucci’s past for inspiration, prefers historical references as a guide to creating spaces in her home and her collections. Her classic feminine interpretation of the Gucci house is a far cry from the Gucci in the ’90s and early 2000s.Each collection presented at fashion week was inspired by something. Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest collection was inspired by modern dance and, in turn, he commissioned top model Coco Rocha to perform a modern dance while wearing his creations.Inspirations range from a simple obsession with shapes, such as in the Calvin Klein spring collection, to more complex inspirations like those of Alexander McQueen who, according to style.com, was moved by Charles Darwin, the survival of the fittest and the toxic results of industrialization on the planet.Sometimes designers are inspired by music, sometimes by history and almost always with what’s happening in today’s society. The fashions we choose depend on our mood and a multitude of other factors too advanced to discuss in a simple fashion column. When legendary designers such as John Galliano and Karl Lagerfeld sit down at their drawing tables, they are in a particular mood. They are inspired by a particular set of things. It is fascinating to see a designer’s inspiration transformed into a runway piece. Our clothes have the ability to transform us – they serve as a chameleon for our various moods. One day you might decide you like blue and do an entire outfit in blue, while the next day, you might decide that black is the way to go and do an entire outfit in black. Casual or dressy – why not both? Through clothing, we have the power to wear different personas from one day to the next. And the world’s top designers know that. Their collections are as diverse as the customers who buy them.Walking to class, I sometimes wonder if other people see fashion as I do – an extension of our personality and our moods. Sometimes I wake up and say to myself, “Today, I want to be on Wall Street,” and I wear dress pants, a tie and vest. On my way home, I see someone dressed in all black, and the next morning I wear black skinny pants, a button-up, black vest and black boots.Designers want us to be inspired not only by their collections and what we see on the runway, but what we see in our daily life: the environment, our peers, architecture, etc.If your mood requires an elegant ensemble and fur inspires you, then by all means wear fur. If a cloudy day has you in a darkened mood, then perhaps you might wear black booties, leggings and a trench coat. The next time you see a great outfit, ask yourself, “Why did the designer create that, and why is that particular person wearing it?”You’ll be surprised how much you can learn about a person just by what they wear.Stay classy IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The holiday season is around the corner, bringing with it fancy parties, social gatherings and everything in between. No matter where you decide to make an appearance, it is of the utmost importance that you look your best, and this season you have plenty of options. Before we get to the good stuff, it’s important to go over the essentials of a put-together party outfit. There are several classifications of evening wear, but for simplicity’s sake, I will talk about casual and dressy.A casual cocktail usually means you’re going to someone’s backyard or perhaps your friend’s house for a small gathering, so an Oscar de la Renta gown might be a bit too much.I suggest separates. Items such as skinny jeans or pencil skirts will work wonders for the bottom half, with a silky or ruffly top to complete the look. A casual cocktail outfit can set you back as little as $100 if you shop right.Bloomington offers a wide variety of venues for this type of occasion, including Express, which offers a number of trendy tops at affordable prices. You can also check out some of the locally owned boutiques that carry stylish skinny jeans in dozens of washes and styles. There are basically no restrictions when it come to accessories in this instance – pearls, statement rings and small bags are all acceptable. Just remember to match and keep it trendy. An event taking place in a ballroom or a rented venue usually requires something dressier than a pair of jeans and a top.Sequins, ruffles, bows and ribbons are what you’re shooting for. Regardless of the cut you choose, it needs to be glamorous. For a more conservative look, go for a Valentino or an Oscar de la Renta design. With these elegant, stylish dresses, you will be the center of attention at any party. If you want to skip classic, or if the event is on the less “conservative” side, then opt for designs from Versace, Roberto Cavalli and similar designers. BCBG also offers party dresses for a fraction of the price of other top designers, so if you’re strapped for cash, that’s a good option.Keep the accessories to a minimum, especially if your dress is over-the-top. For shoes, a classic heel or a strappy sandal is acceptable while boots, especially knee- or thigh-high, are unacceptable with a cocktail dress.Glam evenings are a great way to network and make lasting connections, and as college students, we know the importance of making great connections.Having a great dress that stands out for its remarkable design and style will ensure that you stand out from the rest of the crowd. And who doesn’t love the feeling of being the best dressed?Stay classy IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>With days getting shorter and the temperature dropping, the fashion focus is turning to winter coats. This season promises to be one in which coats will shine in a variety of new styles and shapes. As one of the first things people notice about someone’s fashion, a stylish coat is an important staple of any ensemble. A coat is what industry insiders call an “investment piece,” meaning you splurge on an expensive, stylish coat knowing it will be worn often. And because many times it can make less expensive and unstylish clothes look more elegant, it is definitely worth the cash. This season, invest in a brightly colored coat. Darker hues are still popular, but this season, rich shades of red and purple with berry variations such as rich raspberry, along with various shades of pink and maroon, are the runway staples. A colorful piece can instill new life in an otherwise monochromatic and dull outfit. As far as shapes are concerned, choices abound. With decades in the making, the trench coat is still a fashion wonder. And this season, it has been reinvented in funky new silhouettes with more detail than ever. This versatile piece can be paired with leggings and boots for that city-chic look or with a dress for a more feminine feel.Bomber jackets are another hot trend this season. This urban-feeling piece looks best paired with skinny jeans and pumps for that causal, going-to-class look.As a top trend, plaid has also crossed over into the outerwear arena with plaid coats, blazers and even swing coats. Swing coats generally have empire waists and flare out a bit below the breasts. This is a great piece if you are looking for more volume around your mid-section.Victoria Beckham was recently spotted sporting a chic white cape, giving her seal of approval. Capes are one of the edgier pieces this season, but it really adds that extra level of “umph” to your outfit. With Beckham on your side, you can’t go wrong.Mini-sizing is in again this season, and that means three-quarter sleeve jackets and cropped coats are another trend this fall. The cropped coat looks great with a pair of high-waisted pants or a skirt. The military jacket is several seasons strong but nevertheless clean, polished and sexy. It can be worn to an office meeting, a casual lunch or even a formal dinner. Blend richly detailed masculine pieces with softer feminine fashions to achieve the military jacket’s full effect. No matter what type of coat or jacket you decide on, adding details such as ruffles, bows, pleats or dress-like cuts add a little femininity to an otherwise rough season. Most of the above coats will be available at Saks or Nordstrom. For a more affordable find, try local vintage stores such as Cactus Flower or lower-end stores such as Macy’s. Stay classy IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Designer pieces are the most coveted items in the fashion industry, but unless you’ve got the big bucks, you won’t last long in the shopping rings of top design houses.Design powerhouses offer the latest styles, the highest quality and the prestige of their name. And that, of course, comes with a high ticket price usually around the thousand-dollar mark.In the fashion industry, everything eventually ends up in discount department stores and that is good news for fashionistas on a budget. The runway styles will be replicated and tweaked by lower-end retailers and sold for an affordable price, meaning everyone has access to fashionable pieces.Trendy retailer H&M is always one step ahead with its edgy Euro-inspired collections for men, women and even kids. Leggings, accessories, sweater dresses, cardigans and scarves are just a few of the pieces H&M offers, and they all come at amazing prices. A well-designed and crafted dress cardigan will only set you back about $50 – a bargain price compared to designer cardigans. When I wear H&M, I’m always complimented on that particular piece, and everyone immediately assumes it’s designer. I love the feeling of knowing I found a great piece at a bargain price. For a sophisticated look for both men and women at a bargain price, there is no better place than Banana Republic. The silk kimono-sleeve knot top and the ruffle-tie neck blouse are among my favorite tops this season, and Banana Republic has plenty of them. Sweater-dressing is a top trend at the retailer. Check out the merino wool belted sweater dress for $98.In the mood for print? The leopard print sweater dress will satisfy that need at a bargain price.Banana Republic offers jeans, pants, accessories, dresses and shoes, so you’re bound to find something. For an even more sophisticated look, check out the BR Monogram collection, which features higher-end clothing for men and women. For more affordable chic pieces, check out retailers such as Carson Pirie Scott in Indianapolis, Express and even Marshalls – if you dig around enough you’re bound to find a piece or two you like.Local shops such as Pitaya and Cactus Flower offer fashionable pieces at great prices, so make sure to pay them a visit. This not-so-new philosophy of cheap and chic has many people thinking it’s still impossible to look designer for smaller price tags – well I’m here to tell you that you’re very wrong, my friends. How many times have you come across, “look like you just came off the runway for bargain prices” slapped across a page of your favorite magazine? Plenty, I’m sure.As a student, why spend $2,000 on a sweater when you can get the same one for $70 at Banana Republic or H&M? I always say a smart shopper is the best shopper.Stay classy IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Gabrijel Gelic is a sophomore majoring in finance. This fall is the perfect time to let your wild side loose while still looking polished and sophisticated.Exotic leathers and skins instantly upgrade any look, and this season the runways are jam-packed with luxurious crocodile and snake skins.Put away those straw totes and lightweight canvas bags. Pick up an oversized exotic skin tote – a top trend this season. The Nancy Gonzalez gathered croc shoulder bag is great to take from class to class, while the Carlos Falchi’s pleated python shoulder clutch is your best bet for those glam evening gatherings – small enough to carry around with ease, but big enough to store all your nightly needs. The Armani Collezioni featured an immaculately designed leather crocodile-embossed silver jacket. This versatile piece can be worn with denim for a casual look or a pant for a dressier look. Design houses such as Oscar de la Renta and St. John all joined in on this exotic fun by designing cardigans, jackets and tops accented with crocodile. The Ralph Lauren metallic python skirt is to die for. For a devastatingly fashionable look, this exotic piece is best paired with a romantic blouse and a pair of Sergio Rossi python gladiator sandals. Another great piece from the Ralph Lauren collection featured a python foil vest with a cleaver mix of fur accents.Bomber jackets are huge this fall with practically every designer having a variation of sorts. The Dolce and Gabbana variation featured a sporty bomber jacket that looks great paired with a skinny jean and a pair of pumps. The St. John print bomber jacket variation is more on the colorful side and looks great with a dress pant and a pair of patent heels – classy and conservative. But don’t stop with your clothes.Exotic skins have also crossed over to home decor. The crocodile-embossed vanity accessories available at Neiman Marcus look great with those snazzy Fendi crocodile linens – mix and match! While exotic skins are a great find this season, just like with fur, they will set you back a couple if not a few thousand dollars. If you’re not ready to throw away those college savings at a pair of Sergio Rossi python sandals or a Nancy Gonzalez python satchel, then go for an exotic belt, wallet or even a key-chain accessory. These more affordable pieces will instantly glamorize your fall outfit and upgrade that look.Go for a Miu Miu crocodile-embossed belt or the fabulously devilish Guanti python gloves available at Neiman Marcus. Even watches with exotic wristbands are now available and hugely popular.Bloomington, with its diversity of fashion and people, is a great place to try out these new, up-and-coming fall trends. I look forward to seeing more “skin” on the IU campus in the upcoming months.Stay classy IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Gabrijel Gelic is a sophomore majoring in finance. For decades, mink has presided as the diva of furs. With its radiant outer coat and dense, soft underfur, it is available in a variety of natural colors and may be sheared for a more casual look. Fur, especially mink, is a top trend this season, be it a fur cape at Peter Som or a one-of-a-kind mink coat with long-haired fox sleeves at J. Mendel. And while trends tend to vary from London to Paris to New York, fur seems to be a fixture for most designers.Cleverly crafted, single-breasted jackets came to life with yeti-like sleeves at Proenza Schouler. The glamorous jackets and chic skirts are flashier with accents of shaggy fur. Unconventional forms, oversized shoulders and bold colors rule the fur offering this season.Miss Sixty featured winter-wonderland, flowy dresses paired with cream and brown fur vests, while Narcissco Rodriguez mesmerized the audiences with a fur-lined, knee-length skirt paired with a leather corset button-up, proving yet again that you can’t go wrong with fur.The fall Gucci collection screams fur with dozens of fur jackets and vests taking this season’s furry award.Nervous about the four-digit price tags that accompany most fur pieces? Well, you are in luck,This season, fur has crossed over to bags, accessories and even shoes. You don’t have to go for a $5,000 vest or jacket: Go for a more affordable scarf or a fur-accented purse. Those will still set you back a few hundred dollars, but at least you’ll have something to keep you warm.Fur-accented shoes are probably the hottest thing this season. Pair a knee-length jacket, opaque leggings and fur-accented ankle boots, and you’ll look like you just came off the runway.Fur is versatile. You can wear it with almost anything.Take a suit, for example. Add a hint of femininity to any suit by wrapping yourself with a mink scarf. If you don’t want to pack up that new floor-length dress you just bought at Saks, you don’t have to. For the cold months, pair it with a fur vest or jacket. For more ideas on how to wear fur, check out style.com.Unfortunately, Bloomington will rarely offer a Gucci fur jacket or even a fur scarf, but if you dig around, you might find something vintage, which is better than no fur at all.Luckily, you can always catch a plane to NYC and get a couple (or five) fur pieces at Barneys. Or, check out a local thrift store. Either way, just get some fur!As always, stay classy IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The city that never sleeps is also the city that never disappoints when it comes to fashion.Of course, I’m talking about New York.Last weekend, I took a trip to the fashion mecca to relax and recharge my fashion batteries. There is nothing more inspiring than standing at Times Square midday on a Friday and watching the endless array of vastly different ensembles. It’s breathtaking.Wondering what captivated me most this time around? Shoes. If you didn’t know, I love shoes. I enjoy a well-designed shoe, and NYC provided plenty of them.I saw stilettos, Mary Janes, ankle boots, lace-ups, knee-length boots, thigh-high boots, sandals, flats, wedges, sneakers, platforms, loafers and more. Naturally, many of the shoes I saw were simply disastrous and lacked any sensibility, but it was great to see variety. It is important to know that when you are presented with a wide variety of choices, you must be selective. Going around in ripped boots, fishnets and a mini doesn’t exactly scream sensible or fashionable. The color palette for this season is as diverse as the Times Square signs at midnight – from a simple black pump to a multi-color, hipster-like sneaker. We’ve seen statement bags, statement necklaces and even statement belts, but this is the season of the statement shoe, and that signals the return of the spectator shoe. This bold shoe looks great with a wide-legged pant or a pair of opaque leggings.Patent is also big this fall. Be it black, blue or pink, it does not matter – what matters is that you own a pair of patent heels.Along with patent, the runways have also seen plenty of exotic skins. The look was a big hit at Donna Karan’s NY collection. It included skins such as crocodile and python in fall’s most popular shades of shiitake, dark gray and pewter. In addition to a simple black heel, which is always a yes, patterned heels are also in. Check out the Yves Saint Laurent snow leopard print shoe – it is to die for!For more of the retro-edgy look, the cone heel pump is one of the trendiest shoes this season and Sergio Rossi offers it in a fabulous giraffe print. An overlaying theme this season is the peep-toe. I’ve seen boots, gladiator heels and stilettos all peep-toed, so if you want to stay within those safety boundaries, a peep-toed, black stiletto is your best bet.It looks like you will be able to keep those wedges for yet another season – I’ve seen them in many of the shows, even platform wedges! If you’re not a heel girl or just can’t pull them off, then you will be glad to hear that flats are still in style, especially metallic for fall. Just as with wedges, you can unpack them from your fall closet and rewear them. This is why fashion is so great – there is something out there for everyone. Now go out there and shop your little hearts out. And remember, always stay classy, IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Gabrijel Gelic is a sophomore majoring in finance.Fall is here and that means it’s time to bring out the plaids, tweeds and velvet. This season, country style is taking over the catwalks. Velvet suits, plaid skirts and everything in between – country has never looked this chic before.Just recently, I purchased a plaid button-up shirt, and I feel amazing in it – everyone else, however, thinks I’ve gone mad. But who cares, right? If you’re thinking your wardrobe needs an update, check out the Bloomington boutiques and retail stores. Granted, you’re not going to find a Versace dress or even studded Gucci boots, but you can find items similar to them. Urban Outfitters is great when it comes to plaid – I think their designers and buyers are plaid-happy, but it works.Don’t worry, ladies. If you aren’t exactly in the mood to dress country, there are plenty of options for you. This fall has something for everyone, from a minimalist silhouette at Calvin Klein to a frilly, ruffled silhouette at Chloe.Elegance without structure was Stefano Pilati’s latest inspiration for the Yves Saint Laurent fall collection. Unfamiliar angles, tweeds, felts and flocked fabrics provided a futuristic feel at Yves Saint Laurent. One critic called it “high-fashion clothing for real life.” At the same time, the collection was very simplistic; a belted sweater dress with a pair of sexy heels was the “it” look for this season.Rock ’n’ roll boyish looks were all the rage at Gucci. Models wearing boots, chains, tailored pants and cropped jackets paraded down the runway. While it was all about the masculine side of things, the collection featured an array of delicate romantic blouses that IU women, I’m sure, would die for.In contrast, Karl Lagerfeld’s fall collection had a very girlish feel to it. Jackets with above-the-knee skirts, bows and poofed skirts bounced on women as they sashayed down the runway.Donatella Versace’s latest collection is a far cry from the house’s usual “sex-in-a-dress” feel. The collection was all about carefully structured pieces and ravishing volumes and shapes. Versace even commissioned an artist to work on a photomontage of urban cityscapes, musclemen, dogs, Versace china and the house ad campaigns, and then made them into a collage on violent purple and yellow dresses.Cropped jackets, frilly dresses, bows, blouses, high-waisted wide legged pants, cocktail-dresses – this season has seen it all. I am excited about the country look. I’ve seen a few pieces that fit the minimalist scheme of things this fall, which is great, but what I haven’t been seeing a lot are clothes that have a unique design to them.Pretty soon, we’re all going to start to look the same – yikes!I think it would be great if the boutiques bought some pieces that resemble the Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen collections, and I’m sure you ladies wouldn’t mind seeing that happen either. If you’re interested in learning more about the trends for fall, or if you want to visit the collections yourself, take a look at style.com.As always IU, stay classy!

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Gabrijel Gelic is a sophomore majoring in finance. The question I am most often confronted with is, “Why fashion?” The answer is quite simple: Because I love it.However, as shocking as it might be to many of you, fashion has not always been a passion for me. It took time, nurturing and a lot of commitment. While other boys my age were focusing on sports and worrying about getting cooties from girls, I spent my spare time glued to the television and computer screens watching fashion shows and getting the latest style scoop from Tim Blanks on Fashion Television. That, ladies and gentleman, is why I have no mercy for people who disregard fashion completely by saying, “Well, fashion just is not my thing.”Or even worse, “I care more about comfort than my actual appearance.”When I hear my fellow classmates say those things, it just brings pain and sadness to my ears. I understand most people will never see fashion as I do, but I do believe that everyone can, and should, have a socially acceptable sense of style. What’s a socially accepted sense of style, you ask? Well, how about I tell you what’s not socially accepted.1. It’s not raining and you’re not Michael Jackson, so you can put the umbrella away. It’s not attractive.2. When did it become OK to wear your dorm key and student ID as an accessory? Never, so stop it.3. The IU Orientation Programs backpacks were cute the day you had your orientation – not so much anymore. You might want to replace that with a tote to avoid being laughed at.4. Bras were invented for a reason. Stop ruining the day of those around you by having it look like there are bouncing balls under your T-shirt.5. Platforms went out with the Spice Girls. 6. Shoes were made for a reason, so stop going around barefoot showing your ugly toes.Undoubtedly there will be girls who will ignore my advice and think they’re cool for standing up for what they believe in. Well, if you like looking like a hobo and using keys and ID tags to accessorize, then, by all means, be an individual.Of course, fashion is more than just physical style. It’s also about the way you carry yourself and portray yourself to the outside world. When I’m sitting on the bus and having to hear how you got wasted the night before and hooked up with 450 guys, that’s not cool. Not only is what you’re saying a complete demoralization of everything style and grace stand for, but you are also making a fool out of yourself to your friends, and, no doubt, the rest of the people who have to sit there on the bus and listen to you. Save those conversations for private places, not public transportation.Remember that if you have nothing classy to say, don’t say anything at all. That’s all for this week, but I want to leave you with a quote to keep in mind as you dress for class tomorrow:“Going to class looking like a hobo: $5. Having me and the rest of IU laughing at you behind your back: priceless.”

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Gabrijel Gelic is a sophomore majoring in finance.Sometimes, even I am surprised to see the lengths girls are willing to go to just to gain men’s attention. A couple days ago, a friend and I were taking a stroll around Bloomington when we noticed a couple of poorly-dressed girls entering a gas station. Naturally, as any dedicated fashion followers would have done, we followed them inside to see what would happen. And, oh boy, were we shocked when we entered the gas station. Upon entrance, we witnessed two young women, no doubt students, skulking around the gas station in their barely-there ensembles. My friend knew I was about to make a comment to them, so he gave me that “You-better-not-make-a-scene” look. I just looked them up and down, then turned around and left wondering what these girls were wearing. One girl had on booty shorts that were barely covering her privates, a white blouse with only the bottom three buttons buttoned and a vest that had the top button uncovered – in other words, her breasts were hanging out. Her accomplice in crime was wearing a gray tank top that I’m assuming was supposed to serve as a dress. Did I mention that the back of the “tank” had a V-cut extending all the way to her lower back? Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for sexy. But if I saw my own sister dressed like that, I’m pretty positive I’d lock her up and never let her go out again. I’m sure you girls know better than to think dressing cheap is fashionable. There are plenty of ways to look sexy, attractive and desirable and none of those include you losing your reputation. You don’t see Gisele or Tyra parading around in booty shorts and belly tanks. The first thing you need to understand is that skin does not necessarily equal sexy. Of course, it’s important to show some skin, but the less you show the classier you will appear.Take a tube dress for example. It’s sexy, it’s fashionable, it shows skin, yet it’s appropriate for going out. And you can always throw on a cardigan or mini-jacket in case you’re feeling more conservative. Let’s not forget about the hundreds of dresses, skirts, shorts, tops, jackets and accessories out there that are very sexy but classy at the same time. If you have to ask yourself if something is trashy, chances are it is.Let’s be real ladies – gentlemen are not attracted to trashy girls who look like they just got mugged and lost half their outfit. My final advice to you: When thinking of a party outfit, think of something you’d be comfortable wearing at the VMAs, or the MTV Awards, and you’ll be just fine. The point of this week’s column is simply to ensure that the parties at IU don’t start resembling brothels and instead are the leaders of style and elegance that other universities can look up to.Let’s keep it classy, IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Gabrijel Gelic is a sophomore majoring in finance. The other day I was reading through a couple of AP world news stories and I happened to stumble across a fashion article which boasted about the individuality and the freshness of the Spring/Summer 2009 London Fashion Week collections. You might wonder why I chose to mention the London fashion week at this particular point in time, but I feel that IU fashion is in desperate need of originality. It’s important to spend a little time talking about how crucial it is for each of us to have an individual fashion style. Let’s take me, for example – I am an avid follower of fashion, but that doesn’t mean I just copy the looks I see on the runways. That’s simply not the point. You want to take what you see on those runways and add your own touch to it. That might be simply adding your favorite scarf or belt – anything that is your “trademark.” What works for me is just taking each look and adding a little “Gabrijel” to it. To me, that means wearing shoes that define me, wearing a fit that screams me and, of course, sporting one of my favorite bags. Yes, men, bags are huge, and I don’t see them going away any time soon. So, all of you boys better start carrying one.No matter what, I always stay true to my style, which, I admit, changes from week to week and sometimes from day to day. But I’m always myself when it comes to style, and anyone who knows me can tell you that. I bring this issue up now because I see so many girls on campus dressing the same way every single day. I sometimes wonder if there was a fashion explosion somewhere on campus and the girls I see are the result of that disaster.Day in and day out, I see those black leggings, the hobo bag, bird-nest hair and that god-awful white T-shirt. If you think that’s an original style, then your issues probably go beyond this article. Today is the day you say “no” to wearing what all of your friends wear and stop copying exactly what you see on the runways. It is never too late to have an original style – plus, don’t you want to be that girl everyone admires for fashion originality?Recently, I came across a fabulous line of sunglasses from Pan-Teaz.com. They come in about a dozen styles with a little “Pan-Teaz” logo inscribed on each of them. Just imagine all the fun jokes you can have with these. You can call up your friends and say, “Gosh, I think I left my Pan-Teaz at your place.” I just love them, and it’s a very original concept. The Pan-Teaz girls will be visiting IU from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. They will have a booth set up on 10th Street and Fee Lane – make sure to check them out.And no, you don’t have to break the bank to be original. I’m not above H&M or other similar stores, and you shouldn’t be either. It’s all about cheap and chic. I’ll talk about that another time, but, for now, it is absolutely acceptable to mix high-end pieces and low-end pieces. I mean, if Isaac Mizrahi did it in his fashion shows, then you shouldn’t have a problem doing it. So, let’s get out there and show the world IU has originality when it comes to fashion.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Look around you for just a moment and count how many people are wearing sweat pants, ripped T-shirts, house slippers and other similar items – you’ll probably lose count in the first five seconds. And while classes are starting here at IU, that is no excuse to carry on those lazy summer fashions. I recently took a stroll around campus in search for my next column inspiration, and, as usual, I was not disappointed with the amount of material I found. Just about everywhere I turned, I saw a couple of girls wearing wife beaters, sweats and a pair of Goodwill house slippers. I find myself repeating this next bit, but I have to say it: The “homeless” look is not “in” nor has it ever been “in.” With fashion being so worldly and accessible, it should be easier than ever to look fashionable. And, of course, I have a few suggestions to help you out. Because it’s still hot and humid outside, you want to keep it minimal but still make it classy. My suggestion for this look is a simple sun dress. Even in Bloomington, I noticed that our boutiques have a great selection of sun dresses. With this type of dress, I would recommend either a flat or a wedge. Both of these match the particular look but still keep your outfit fairly casual and class-appropriate. The big bag is still huge right now, so as long as it matches your dress, it is fair game. However, I would keep away from a bag that has no definition, such as the hobo bag – think more like an oversized tote that allows you to store all of your class essentials but still keeps it fashionable. Needless to say, accessories are huge right now. It is all about that statement piece, and with a sun dress, you have plenty of neck room to work with. I would suggest something beaded and layered. Don’t overdo it by mixing too many metals or too many designs, but make sure it’s bulky because you want everyone to notice that statement piece. Of course you can always throw on a cuff or a bangle to add a little spice to your look. Keep the hair minimal – and when I say minimal, I mean little product, natural styling and lots of flow – bed hair is unacceptable. Natural-looking makeup is the way to go this summer, so keep it to neutral tones and hues with a small addition of gloss to your lips for that girly look. Other looks I like include layering different fabrics and patterns: throwing on a high-waisted skirt with a ruffled blouse and a patent belt, for example. For more inspiration and tips on what to wear to class, take a look at fashion mega-sites such as style.com. I know that sometimes classes and other activities seem to take over our lives, but it only takes a few extra minutes in the morning to look decent. Remember that you don’t have to wear designer to look chic. Chic is all about personal style and making every look, regardless if it’s designer or not, your own. In the end, always make sure that what you wear to class is something you would feel comfortable wearing on a stroll down Fashion Avenue in New York. So let’s get rid of that “homeless” look and bring the chic back to IU.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Fashion is constantly changing. Each new season brings something new to the table, and it can be difficult to keep up with the demands of the fashion world. The fall 2008 collections have been no exception, featuring everything from a structured silhouette, as seen in the Yves Saint Laurent collection, to the more relaxed feeling seen at the Versace show. These eight trends have emerged as this fall’s most wanted:1. Boots – Whether they are thigh-high boots, ankle boots or knee-highs does not matter. What matters is that you own a pair.2. Statement jewelry – Mix bulky high-end and low-end pieces for that off-the-runway look. 3. The romantic blouse – The more fluff and puff, the better.4. High-waisted, wide-leg pants–Pair this look with a simple top and a statement piece for a look that’s nothing less than elegant.5. The sheath dress – A simple dress, possibly belted, is perfect for an afternoon stroll down Kirkwood Avenue. 6. Leather bomber jacket – For an optimal look, pair it with skinny jeans and pumps. 7. Fur – A fur-accented coat will glamorize any outfit.8. Scarves – With many gloomy colors for fall, you can use a colorful Pucci scarf to bring color to any outfit – purple in particular, because it’s this season’s most popular color. The great thing about this season is the versatility of it all – one day you could be wearing an architectural piece from the Balenciaga collection, and the next day you could be wearing a Chloe dress. Another key to looking great this fall is mixing and matching colors and patterns. A sheath, wild-print dress with dark cotton leggings and a leather bomber jacket screams runway-chic while still allowing you to have personality – which, to me, is the most important thing when it comes to style.Don’t be afraid to be fashionable. Too often, we just stick to a pair of jeans and a T-shirt because we’re afraid of being judged and being made fun of. I don’t know about you, but I really don’t give a rat’s behind that Mary Jane over there thinks my outfit is ugly, especially if she is wearing a pair of jeans from 11 seasons ago and a T-shirt she undoubtedly stole from her mother’s closet. The fashion industry survives on those of us who take risks and who aren’t afraid to make mistakes. I want IU to be the most fashionable campus in the state and in the country, for that matter, and, unfortunately, I can’t do it alone. As the fashion columnist for this year, I look forward to seeing lots of runway-chic on campus. Lastly, I’d love to hear from you, the reader. Tell me what you want to see discussed and what you think needs to be changed by e-mailing me at gelicg@indiana.edu. I’m sure I’ll be seeing you all very soon. Hope you had a fabulous summer, and let’s keep fashion alive here in Bloomington.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Whoever said country fashion isn’t stylish never witnessed the chic, bold style of artists such as Shania Twain, the Dixie Chicks and Toby Keith. We see country fashions in our everyday lives, from the sexy leather boots many women love to red-and-black-checkered collared shirts some manly men wear around campus.Country fashion isn’t just limited to pants that come up to your chest, flannel shirts and cowboy hats. That’s just one type of country style, but there are countless others.Let’s take a look at Carrie Underwood. She has won numerous Grammy awards for her catchy country hits, and she is one of the most fashionable women out there. Carrie knows how to rock the glamorous look at awards shows and parties, but she’s also been known to show her Oklahoma roots. Just like her music, her fashion is accessible to the mainstream crowd while still exhibiting country style.Looking country-cute is as much about what you are wearing as it is about your personality. If you’re fun, flirtatious and nice you’ll fit right in. For that “prairie country” look, your best bet is to wear a simple spaghetti-strapped, knee-length spring eyelet dress like the one Underwood once wore with a pair of brown boots. Keep to one color with the dress, and stay away from floral patterns. You can throw on a pair of brown leather boots with classic-patterned, white stitching, and you are well on your way to looking like the all-American country girl. Keep your makeup to a minimum for this style, especially in the summertime. Let your hair flow down to your shoulders, just like Carrie often does. Don’t be afraid to add a little product – perhaps some hair spray – to your hair, but keep it light and natural. Now, if you want to look a bit like an urban country girl, put on a few bulky bangles and a couple of necklaces, and you will definitely stand out from the crowd. Men who dress country exude masculinity and confidence, and if you don’t know what I mean, just take a look at Toby Keith. Keith’s country-boy meets Dolce & Gabbana look is fresh and stylish, even while he sticks to his country roots. Men, for you I specifically recommend button-up shirts. They don’t have to be flannel or checkered. They can be simple, multicolored or patterned. In other words, they can pretty much be anything. Open up a few buttons towards the top and wear a pair of comfortable jeans that matches your top.Throw on a pair of cigar-colored, leather boots with western-style stitching. You can top it off with a cowboy hat, if you want, but this is not a requirement. My main goal with this week’s topic was to encourage you to try out a new fashion that most would not find stylish. Play around with what makes you comfortable. Remember that if you don’t try something you will never find out if it looks amazing on you. Don’t let stereotypes prevent you from being bold, because fashion is all about being chic and rising above the crowd.

Come May, Whitney Babbitt will join the many IU seniors who will continue to search for a job this summer after they graduate. \n“I’m taking the summer off and making job searching my full-time job,” she said. \nIn the midst of a slumping economy, IU students are having a harder time finding jobs, even with the help of campus career services. Mark Brostoff, associate director of the Kelley School of Business Undergraduate Career Services Office, said, on average, students are receiving fewer offers than before. Some firms are also not hiring as many students as usual, he said. \nWhile all areas are seeing certain side effects of the flagging economy, Brostoff said companies that produce, sell or manufacture consumer goods are the hardest hit by the situation.\nMarcia Debnam, the career services director for the School of Journalism, said while some professions are having difficulties with the economic slump, others have not been affected. She said journalism students, for instance, usually only get jobs when someone leaves or retires from a position, and this won’t change with the sluggish economy. However, Debnam said she did see an increase in the number of internships this year, probably because companies are looking for cheaper labor to fulfill their needs.\nBrostoff advises students to accept their offers if the job and the workplace appeals to them. Just-in-time hiring or last-minute hiring by companies that need to fill positions quickly are also experiencing a drastic decrease, as companies spend more time planning their employment needs. \nThe reduction in jobs is not as catastrophic as it was post-Sept. 11, but is strong enough that students should consider searching for jobs earlier and accepting those outstanding offers, Brostoff said. \nGetting an internship is of the utmost importance, Brostoff said. Internships allow the employee to test-drive the student while also raising the student’s chances of eventually landing a job offer. While grade point average is an important tool in finding those internships, students should also consider getting involved with campus organization \nand clubs. \n“I think it all goes down to making yourself marketable,” he said. \nBrostoff said internships also allow the company to learn about the student and to understand the student’s skills and weaknessess. \nHe also encouraged students to have their resumes reviewed early on, because most of the time the resume is the first thing a potential employer sees. Brostoff said students should also get involved with their school’s career service office through courses and workshops.\n“IUCareers.com has helped me in looking for jobs and available positions,” \nBabbitt said. \nStudents who go to such lengths, Brostoff said, should have an easier time eventually finding a job. \n“Employees are always looking for outstanding, motivated students to fill positions,” Brostoff said.

Think big hair, tons of makeup and lots of feathers. This year’s showgirl-themed Miss Gay IU is scheduled to take place at 8 p.m. Friday in the IU Auditorium. \nIn its nearly 17 years of existence, Miss Gay IU has become one of the nation’s largest and most-attended drag pageants in the United States. The contestants will compete for the Miss Gay IU title through personal interviews, an evening gown competition, a talent production and an on-stage question and answer session. Friday’s show will be all about entertainment and fun, but OUT also plans to donate 10 percent of proceeds to an as-yet-undecided charity, said Miss Gay IU host Vicki St. James. \nMiss Gay IU is completely run and sponsored by OUT, a campus group organized to promote the welfare of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students at IU and to create awareness for the GLBT community in Bloomington. \n“The purpose of the event is to promote and celebrate diversity,” said sophomore and OUT president Joshua Sutton. “It serves to open up people’s minds to diversity and also to bring the GLBTQ community closer together.”\nThis year’s theme is “Showgirls.” Those who attend can expect to see lots of flashy costumes, feathers and rhinestones, Sutton said.\nVeteran Miss Gay IU judge and OUT faculty adviser Helen Harrell pointed out that Miss Gay IU is a great way to end the year and educate students about drag, which she said has been around for 2,000 years as an art form. \nSt. James said the event allows individuals to learn about performing and gives them a chance to experiment with female impersonations. St. James has been with Miss Gay IU for more than 16 years and has enjoyed it every year.\n“The students are great, and they seem to get a kick out of it every time they participate,” St. James said. \nShe said people are not going to know if they like Miss Gay IU until they come to the event. St. James encouraged all students, not just those who are part of the GLBT community, to come out and celebrate diversity on a night of “fabulous” entertainment. \n“Give it a chance,” she said.
