Whiskey Formal; Bear's Place Tuesday, 11:00 PM Southern, alternative, and hard rock all converge together in "Whiskey Formal," an act which results in vitriol, punching power chords, and the occasional good, long scream.
When I heard Meat Puppets were going to play the Bishop one thought immediately popped into my head: Will they play "Sam?" I had to know. Since the Phoenix band's '82 self-titled hardcore punk debut album, Meat Puppets' catalog has run the gamut, from grunge rock to country western to jam band stuff.
JJ Grey and Mofro; The Bluebird Friday, 8 PM Listening to JJ Grey and Mofro (though previously, just Mofro), and you may experience what it's like navigating through southern swamplandia: there's the freewheeling waters of sound--a sludgy hodgepodge with your typical bass and Fender showman and hard, boxy percussion, but with the added soul-groove of saxophone, trumpet and organ--piloted through by the vocals of JJ Grey himself, which, despite the current of melody, manage to thread together engaging narrative.
For the week of 4/1 through 4/7/2013 1. Charles Bradley - Victim of Love (Daptone) 2. Tyler the Creator - Wolf (Columbia) 3.
Warm Soda; The Bishop Thursday, 9 PM Combining the chugging of garage band power chords with harmonic 'glam pop' vocals, Warm Soda brings a healthy hodgepodge of solid sounds all the way from Oakland, CA.
For the week of 3/25 through 3/31/2013 1. Phosphorescent - Muchacho (Dead Oceans) 2. The Strokes - Comedown Machine (RCA) 3.
Thollem Sworld; Rachael's CAfe Wednesday, 7:30 It would seem, by his multitude of press quotes, that the only way to describe the music of keyboardist Thollem Sworld (sadly, no, not his real name) is with a list of abstractions.
Kentucky Nightmare; Bear's Place Tuesday, 11 PM Kentucky Nightmare specializes in melodramatic folk pop.
Brownshoe; Rachael's Cafe Tuesday, 8 PM Since Brownshoe's debut album "Vanity" in 2007, this quartet of Californians have been making a steady progression into bolder and bolder sounds.
Rice Cultivation Society; Rachael's Cafe Tuesday, 8 PM Self-introspective; philosophically erudite, and with an album inspired by the fall of Icarus, Rice Cultivation Society certainly embodies the description of "experimental." Lead songwriter Derek Smith, who put together the LP "Sky Burial" by recruiting local musicians, also has a pet duck as you can see-- at least, I think it's a duck.
Chris Cohen; The Bishop Thursday, 9:30 PM For someone dabbling in psychedelic pop, a genre often given to loud bouts of mixed instrumentation and extended periods of amplifier static, and described by "Pitchfork" as "jagged," Chris Cohen treats his solo music with surprising delicacy.
For the week of 3/11 through 3/17/2013 1. David Bowie, The Next Day (Columbia) 2. Various, Sound City: Real to Reel (RCA) 3.
For the week of 2/25 through 3/3/2013 1. Atoms for Peace, Amok (XL) 2. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Push the Sky Away (Bad Seed) 3.
An Argot; Rachael's Cafe Thursday, 8 PM Rachael's Cafe will be hosting a bevy of eclectic performances tomorrow night, among them the "quirky indie-folk" duo, An Argot.
Eunan McIntyre; The Bluebird Tuesday, 9:30 Though he may be a little too early for Saint Patrick's Day, the award-winning Irish performer Eunan McIntyre will be bringing the sounds and the humor (and the cold, wet weather) of Ireland to the Bluebird.
Computer Magic; The Bishop Monday, 9 PM You can get a pretty good sense of Computer Magic just by the name.
Minus the Bear; The Bluebird Monday, 9 PM Minus the Bear hardly needs an introduction. The five prog, alternative indie rockers from Seattle have been dropping hits left and right since their formation in 2001.
For the week of 2/18 through 2/24/2013 1. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Push the Sky Away (Bad Seed) 2.
