Sound and Fury: Magnetic South Revue Brings Eclectic Bill to the Bishop

Google translating the name "Circuit des Yeux" and one will find the rather esoteric, Cirque du Soleil-esque translation "Circuit of the Eyes." For the Bishop's Magnetic South Review six-band power union on Wednesday night the promise of an unparalleled visual (and audio) spectacle was more than fulfilled. Take for example the opening act, Sitar Outreach Ministry.

Sweet Dreams Are Made of This: Fitz Incites a Bluebird Tantrum

Noelle Scaggs took off her shoes after just one song. She wanted to move around, because the soulful backup singer of the indie soul sextet Fitz and the Tantrums said she knew Tuesday's show at the Bluebird was going to be a party. And yet for a new band that lays down catchy singles with a baritone sax in their best attempt at a Motown revival, the audience treated Fitz as though they were a stadium act in Assembly Hall.

Apache Dropout, Circuit Des Yeux, thee Open Sex, Mad Monk, Sitar Outreach Ministry, Purple Seven @ The Bishop Wednesday, March 7 8 p.m. Free 18+ Encompassing all of these bands into a single preview is like trying to render all the tastes of an eclectic salad to a glowering Gordon Ramsay: you're already daunted at the task as is, and because this particular salad is composed of everything to moaning synthesized soprano and head-bang funk, you have no idea where the hell to even begin.

Of PBR and Denim: The Gates of Slumber Conquer Indy's Jukebox

When I arrived at Indy's Jukebox - a little-known dive on Prospect Street in the shadow of Lucas Oil Stadium - I thought my review of The Gates of Slumber show was going to be a piece about an erstwhile prodigal son's reclaiming of a lost metal identity.

Tranquility for a New Season: The High Plains Brings New Album to the Bishop

It's a different crowd at the Bishop on Wednesday night than usual. Instead of the ragtag pulled-together wardrobes of Tommy Hilfiger ties and combat boots; the speckled scarves and pullovers and short-slack-Sperrys trio, the audience sported an entirely new wardrobe of crinkled sleeve-pulled dress shirts with mauve ties, slacks, and rimmed Prada glasses.

Album Review: The High Plains, "Our Devices"

For those who have never had the pleasure of listening for hours on end to the smooth abiding lull of a Bob Dylan discography, or the slightly accented yet gentle voice of Paul Simon, self-described "country, indie folk-rock" band The High Plains will likely not reach this audience with their new album Our Devices.

A Nation of Squeamish Millions: Conscious Hip Hop and the Myth of a Post-Racial America

Last Tuesday, I got the chance to see legendary Public Enemy emcee Chuck D speak. The theme of his lecture was billed as "Race, Rap and Reality," and amid standard motivational cliches on making it in America and the importance of getting an education (plus some more timely reactions to the rises of Barack Obama and Jeremy Lin), Mr. D had a few interesting thoughts about the state of contemporary hip hop.

Wildernessking needs your help

This isn't a typical post for Live Buzz, but it somehow feels right given the content of my forthcoming music column for the IDS (it's all about Kickstarter and similar crowdfunding programs) and my recent blog post about the best albums of 2012 thus far.
