We're coming to you from the O'Hare Marriott in Chicago, where Big Ten Media Day has gathered the basketball coaches from the Big Ten to sit at round tables and answer questions as us sweaty media guys crowd them with our microphones and digital voice recorders. Anyway, we came into today looking to, obviously, get some more quotes about IU from coach Kelvin Sampson and the players and to ask a variety of Big Ten coaches about 1.) IU and 2.) their teams. Instead, we've heard, almost exclusively, discussion about recruiting centered on Eric Gordon's defection from Illinois.
Eamonn and I are up in Chicago now for Big Ten media day, which kicks off tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. But, before we left, we caught a good chunk of the open basketball scrimmage this afternoon in Assembly Hall.
As if Eric Gordon hadn't caused enough of a rift between Illinois and Indiana already. Now, point guard Derrick Rose - the top-rated point guard in the country according to Rivals.com - is making an unofficial visit to Chambana this weekend to watch the Blue and Orange game, the Chicago Sun-Times reported today. Rose announced he'd narrowed his five schools down to IU, Memphis, UCLA, DePaul and Kansas about a month ago, and has since visited IU, Memphis and Notre Dame (?). As early as a week ago, the rumors around Rose centered on his lack of commitment to Memphis at the Tigers' Midnight Madness event and his supposed leanings toward IU; now, surely, the talk will begin to look more and more like the Illinois-IU Eric Gordon slamfest.
As Ryan previously noted, IU coach Kelvin Sampson talked plenty of baseball during his press conference Thursday afternoon.
You may or may not know, but Coach Sampson is a pretty big baseball fan. Here's some of his thoughts on tonight's NLCS game between the Mets and Cardinals that he dished to us at Assembly Hall this afternoon: I don't think (Cardinals pitcher Jeff ) Suppan can do tonight what he did Monday.
It's had to be a tremendous week to be an IU sports fan. Optimism for the football team is as high as it's been in a while, despite a nearly impossible prospect Saturday at Ohio State.
A friendly reader sent this video of, I would argue, last season's highlight - Marco Killingsworth's dunk against Duke.
While Ryan and Eamonn mingled in the press room, I stayed above ground to catch everything that was happening on the court.
The night just finished up, and while we'll have Matt's full rundown in a few minutes - he's tidying up his notebook as we speak - I wanted to point out something far more entertaining than any of the basketball that was played tonight - the player introductions. Each player had an individual song, which they presumably selected at some point prior to tonight.
It's about 10:30 and most of Assembly Hall's seats are filled, except for the balcony. Eric Gordon Jr.
What a day to start to the IDS basketball blog! We hear IU just picked up a relatively heralded recruit - anyone else hear that? Yes, today is the perfect day to begin our humble little operation.
