Indiana’s COVID-19 public health emergency order will expire Saturday

After almost two years, the executive order Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb signed in March 2020 declaring COVID-19 a statewide public health emergency will be allowed to expire on Saturday.

Holcomb signed a new law Thursday that will not renew the public health emergency. The law will still allow for Indiana residents to receive additional health care and food assistance from the federal government.

Holcomb released a statement Nov. 16 outlining the legislation that needed to be signed into law before he would end the COVID-19 public health emergency. Some of his demands included the continuation of benefits and federal matching funds for Medicaid that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. He also asked the legislature to pass legislation allowing children ages 5 to 11 to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

IU will end its on-campus mask mandate March 4. The university cited the state and county’s expected order expirations as one of the reasons masks on campus will be optional starting Friday.
