IU-owned PBS television station WTIU will be turning 50 years old in 2019.

During that time, the station has grown to be streamed in over 600,000 homes throughout Indiana.

Fifty years ago, WTIU had only one channel and a staff of three. Since its first broadcast on March 3, 1969, the station has grown into five channels with video streaming options, more than 80 employees and an estimated audience of 1.5 million viewers.

“Television has changed dramatically since we went on the air 50 years ago but our mission to inform, educate and entertain has not,” WTIU general manager Perry Metz said in a press release. “WTIU works hard to bring a sense of community to southern Indiana through news, original programming and documentaries.”

The station produces a wide range of local, regional and national programs 24 hours a day. They reach 29 counties in western and southern central Indiana, according to their website.

WTIU’s 50th anniversary celebration will continue throughout 2019, with community events that will share the history of WTIU. The signature event will be an evening with Judy Woodruff from “PBS NewsHour." The event will take place on Sept. 21 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Tickets will go on sale later this year.
